Everyday freedom pass owners get in the bus in the morning knowing their pass won’t let them on for free and everyday when they ask the bus driver is like yeah no problem.
But a clearly under 18 year old, sometimes even school uniform wearer, clearly entitled to free travel tries to get on the bus and bus drivers don’t let them on?

I’m just asking like why in like a ‘y tho’ sense. I’m not inviting discussion. It was more just me expressing annoyance at this than asking anyone to tell me why individual bus drivers in London do this |

Yeah I’ve paid for young people without their oyster before when the bus driver decides to be long. And I’d probably pay for someone with a freedom pass too. |

Used to be £3.30 (not sure the price nowdays) and you could go on any bus in the city all day that day..
They only had a little print of the date at the bottom, so people would buy one and use it for weeks |

What are they

I was on a bus recently when a man got on using his pass his wife followed and discovered she'd forgotten hers. She called to him and he literally shrugged his shoulders, stayed seated while she got off with the dogs and walked home. I wouldn't have wanted to be in his shoes when she got in  |

My fiancé and I love bus drama like that. The other day we were on a bus and a wife moved because she said she could smell fart really loudly and he refused to move with her because he said she was being loud and embarrassing (they both clearly had been drinking) |

No. Once you reach pension age buses are free in the whole country I believe and some trains in limited areas. I can buy a 'senior' rail card that knocks a percentage off my fare but adds 50p for the privilege of booking on line. I have to book on line because the ticket office is never open . |

Haven't used public transport since I was at school so I've no idea what passes are available.
Back then student passes were only given to anyone who lived more than 3 miles from the school.
Door to door my house was exactly 2.9 miles so I was refused one.
Every other child in the street including my siblings however were given one.
The local bus drivers asked me why I was the only one paying and when I explained they refused to take my money after that.
Those same drivers were renowned for picking up elderly people foc on their return from the morning school runs and the buses were out of service.
They would probably all lose their jobs these days for various reasons. |

The idea of public transport outside London is largely a joke!
Londoners have far more spent on them per capita than anywhere else when it comes to transport.

Nope just a TfL thing although perhaps some similar schemes in some places. Genuinely there are no or very few buses in many places as well. The large village I used to live in which in the scheme of things is not very remote and had a lot of people over 60 used to have one per day |

I think bus should be free for kids up to 18 like it is in London."
I think if 'they' keep banging on that we need to use public transport more and leave our cars at home blah blah blah, 'they' should ensure that the transport is available, accessible and efficient.
If I drive to my dad's it takes thirty minutes door to door on a good day. If I take the bus it's an hour and a half...if the bus turns up. |

I know of places where if you get the one bus to the nearest town with a big supermarket you have about twenty minutes before the only return bus leaves. |

There is one bus an hour to the nearest big town near me. It costs 3x as much as fuel EACH and the last one back on a night time is at 8.30pm. Even on a weekend.  |

My place of work is 35 miles from home which takes approx an hour to drive every morning traffic dependent.
I've had a look just now and to use public transport I would have to take 3 separate buses which would involve almost 60 miles of travel and take 2½ hours but the first bus doesn't leave until 7.30am.
It would also cost me £30 a day whereas it's costing me less than £10 at the moment.
We don't have a rail network here.
Trains run from Belfast to Dublin and Belfast to Derry with a couple of short spurs from Belfast to Bangor and Larne so anyone going anywhere else in the country has to go by road. |

They were every hour in my town, now Arriva have cut services in my area so god knows how often they run now, I don't think they know themselves, always complaints of buses not turning up when they should. A local company have picked up the tender for the routes without services but they aren't regular.
We are not remote but very rural, I certainly couldn't get rid of my car for public transport |

The bus service round here is actually pretty good. Better than elsewhere in the country. But you pay for kids once they hit 5.
The passes for old people are pretty good too. My parents can travel for free on buses, trams and trains in the West Midlands. But that's from state pension age. Isn't it from a younger age in London? |
