"Is he a top 5 rapper of all time? "
Well I’m a Hip-Hop Head. He’s not my favourite. And as much as I hate to admit it, the facts are...
*Biggest selling of all time
*Prolific writer
*Formidable Battle Rapper
*Inspired a new generation of MCs such as Hopsin, Logic & NF
*Used his position to put other MCs on
*Was a major Gateway Drug for people that didn’t listen to rap
Most of the G.O.A.Ts can’t lay claim to most of that...So, he is the greatest |

There lots of reasons for much of that stuff. And for me his sales are the last thing that I’m considering here.
I don’t like Em but I find him an interesting one. Everyone in the game loves him and his music. Most of the people I’ve engaged with online don’t rate him in their top 5. I mean I could confidently name 5 better and more durable artists than him.
Taking my bias out of it is hard so I always like to get other opinions. But I don’t think any respectable rap fan puts Em over Jay Z tbh. And that’s regardless of where you have Jay on your list. |

I did used to be a huge Em fan in like year 7/8. I loved his crazy stuff. And his earlier stuff too. But then Kendrick and Cole came along. I got into Jay Z and Nas and Raekwon and Pac and Biggie. Those are my faves but I think Em sits amongst them. Where though? I can hear anywhere from 4-7. Not higher for me though. |

Sales are the last thing your considering when discussing GOATs?
Sales are the cultural impact of an artist.
I can tell you’re the type that like Lyrical Spherical MCs LOL
Sorry, I dislike Hov’ as a human being. The things he’s said. Never impressed me. Ain’t had many bops. He was one of figure heads of the Bling Era When I largely checked out of mainstream Hip-Hop. |

Everyone likes different stuff and that’s okay. It’s a good thing.
I haven’t really thought about my top five rappers. It’s a bit of a wide category to narrow down. I’d put Buck 65 in there. And Jimmy Jamz (or Jams F Kennedy, depending on what name he’s using at the time). And I’m prepared to bet Pickles wouldn’t even include them in a top 100. Horses for courses, innit? |

I've only been listening to rap for 39 years, so I don't know if that makes me a respectable fan, but I absolutely put Em above Jay. Jay has a better voice, but I won't give him the vote on anything else. |

"Honourable mention territory for me, with Cole, Kendrick, Big L, DMX and Rakim.
My 5 would be:
Jadakiss
Raekwon
Big Pun
Nas
Jigga
"
Big pun was an absolute unit
The guy was 700lbs when he died.
He was 5’7
To put that in perspective, Thor was 6’9 and 450lbs when he won worlds strongest man
Off topic but I was listening to a podcast where this got brought up and I just couldn’t believe how much of a unit this dude was. Big pun was no pun. Dude was big |

I like Eminem for an English language rapper. He’s the only English rapper I listen to tbh. I listen to rap in Russian, French, Spanish, and Italian far more.
My absolute favourite rapper, but non English language rapper, is René Joglar Pérez. In the world of Spanish language rappers, he is Eminem’s equivalent. He has smashed the record previously held by British rapper, Harry Shotta’s, song "Animal" with 1,771 words on the track after he beat Eminem's record of 1,560 with "Rap God." He has won the most Latin Grammy Awards with over 25, and four Grammy Awards. His songs have taken government’s down across Latin America. His diss tracks have ended careers because of his ability to verbally attack with a skill others lack. He writes raps denouncing inequality, colonialism, racism, and injustices. He’s won Nobel Peace Awards for his songs and their support of social causes.
He was meant to release a new album this year with songs he collaborated on with English hip-hop/rappers. Sadly, it’s on a delay for another year. I’ve been waiting since 2020 for this album. He is against it and releasing music when issues affecting the world are occurring and he’s currently pouring himself into the wars going on. |

"Is he a top 5 rapper of all time? "
Not when we've had
Big L
Big Pun
Biggie
Nas
Wu-tang
Jay z
Etc.
Don't get me wrong, em can rap but I don't feel like he's music's been decent since he's first 2 albums.
Personally. |

Hall of fame Hov I did it all without a pen.
GOAT.
The reason I am sceptical is because artists ole Stormzy and Aitch in Grime will outsell and outstream Kano and aren’t even close to them man. Man like Macklemore will sell however many albums and then win best rap album over one of the greatest rap albums of all time.

I mean my top 10 personal favourite rappers have some UK MCs and rappers in there. I me the purpose of discussion I’m keeping with those that are widely accepted as top 10-15 rappers I think. Because yeah people who don’t listen to Eminem might not even have him in their top 10 but I think generally accepted he’s at least that. If that makes sense |

Aside from the whole never writing his lyrics down thing, Jay’s body of work is more consistent over a long period than arguably any other rapper through time. Relapse to now- all of Em’s stuff is trash. If that doesn’t count then Nas is better than Em because he released 3/4 of the greatest rap albums ever in succession. But he’s been rubbish ever since
Jay released 444 a few years ago and Eminem hasn’t released a good album since early 2000s. The kids born when he last released a good album are over 18 now. |

"Apparently he can't be in top 5 never mind No.1 as (he's white) took from a racists point of view that's doing the fb rounds.
However the man is the G.O.A.T at the rap game. "
I don’t think he can’t be because he’s white. I do *wonder* whether it makes him more likeable to white rap fans though. For example in my life, nearly every Eminem *fan* or person that had him as their GOAT is White (in person and online). I don’t think he’s top 5 though and I think he’s got other things to overcome other than being a White rapper.
As an aside, I don’t think most People that gatekeep** rap music are actually racist but that depends on how you understand and define racism I guess. For another thread which I will certainly not be starting. |

Isn't it the case that rap - in terms of sales - has always been consumed more by white middle-class teens? I think Sylvia Robinson knew that as well as NWA and Wu. |

His shop in Times Square is pretty impressive .
I liked that you could get your sweets in single colour bags.
I'm not sure about rappers as I don't think I know 5 of them. |
