Who is doing Veganuary?

Do you like animals?

Do you want to reduce the suffering in the world?

Would you like to reduce your impact on the world?

Then why not try Veganuary?

It's easier than ever to try being vegan. Years ago being vegan did man lentils and chick pea curry (both of which are great btw) but with lots of alternatives to be the methadone that reduces the suffering of heroin then now is a great time to try.

I have been vegan for 4 years and used to cure my own meat and make sausages so was a big switch for me. It took me about 3 months to go fully vegan and have not looked back.

Oh I could go vegan except X!

Go on then! You don't get reported to the world vegan council!

Are the meat substitutes bad for you?

I suppose it depends how much processed food you eat allready. Processed food is bad full stop. But better than meat processed food as it doesn't have the environment impact and meat replacement, as I said above, is the methadone to get off the heroin.

Don't you have a deficiency in vitamin xyz?

No.

Do I have to be vegan after or can I reduce my meat intake?

Either is fine. Most people reduce their meat intake afterwards with some going vegan in time. I think that perfect is the enemy of good.

Good luck to those trying it.

This thread proves the usual rule about vegetarians and vegans - for every apparently insufferable vegan, there's always many more omnivores popping up to screech about meat. And yet it's never the omnivores who are painted as insufferable

Whaley Bridge,Nr Buxton,

In a country with the toughest animal husbandry/animal welfare legislation in the world, enforced by multiple agencies from DEFRA to the RSPCA,and monitored schemes such as Farm Assured,Red Tractor etc, where is the 'suffering'? How many veggies/vegans who moralise and preach about animal suffering stand outside a mosque on Friday to protest against the practice of Halal slaughter? If you slit any animals throat you wil be arrested and charged before rigormortis has set in.

I love animals but don't have any issues with eating meat. In reality, most animals that are used for food purposes wouldn't exist without that purpose & if the world suddenly became vegan all of those animals would become extinct.

On the other hand, it would be helpful if more people did reduce their meat consumption, it would be really positive for the environment.

So... animal welfare exists therefore you can't fathom how animals suffer as being raised solely to be eaten or manipulated to produce milk beyond what nature intended, and also look Muslims?

Most of the domesticated animals we know are not capable of living without human intervention and support, because we've bred them to a point for our own purposes.

Most sophisticated talk I've seen on this has suggested that, if a point comes where animal consumption/ use ends, we need to gradually bring about their extinction (obviously animals with common ancestors may still exist).

RSPCA are now saying that the way we raise chicken causes harm while they are alive, as does the type of chicken that grows too quickly, having been selected over generations to do so. Many suffer and die before dieing before even being able to be killed. The red tractor is an industry badge that only means 'we are doing the legal minimum' as opposed to some idea of higher welfare.

The ones that go to slaughter, get this, probably don't want to be killed.

Animals feel pain and fear what is about to happen to them. Then they get killed. For years I was able to get away from this in my mind, but then I stopped lying to myself to make myself feel better.

That sounds like suffering to me? What's your understanding of suffering and how doesn't the meat industry confirm to that idea?

Plenty of those breeds would revert straight back to being ferrel, pigs are a prime example

As for chickens it’s the breed/type that would die out due to them being purposely breed for meat consumption, plenty of duel purpose breeds and game fowl that would forage perfectly well without humans

The older breeds would do particularly well

The ones before factory farming became prevalent

I've got no skin in the game - as noted, I'm an omnivore - but it matters to be factually correct. We've created creatures that depend on us, and we need to consider their welfare even if our "use" for them has ended and even if our climate demands that we bring their existence to an end.

Why can't the OP say that you're being influenced by corporate interests? Big Meat don't want you to know the health benefits of eating less meat, it'll be bad for their bottom line. Big Pharma will be heartbroken - animals are fed all sorts of pills to encourage them to grow big enough to feed us

We are not talking about subsistence farmers or smallholders. We are talking about the vast majority of humans who do not live like that in the UK. It's baffling how quicky the extreme examples get thrown out when very few people here are substance farmers or hunt I don't think smallholders should be keeping food to eat themselves. That's my position.

If that's what I'd said you might have a point.

You're saying "we evolved to do this, therefore this is justification to do this"

We didn't evolve for cars or parliaments or mobile phones. And yet I bet you still use (or are governed) by them.

Please be consistent. If we must eat meat because we evolved to eat meat, get rid of your car and walk.

As I am not making such a stupid argument, I am not going to get rid of my access to modern transportation, because I realise that evolution is not a justification.

"

For sure. I'm arguing basically on your side on this one.

I just think it's not compatible with your position. If killing animals for meat is cruel, it's cruel, end of story, surely.

I find evolutionary arguments to be ridiculous at best.

You are right, we didn't evolve to use phones but our brains did to enable us to invent phones. This was primarily because our brains evolved due to differences in our diets, from most of the other Great Apes, in that we benefitted from eating things like bone marrow and fish. Not carrots and lettuce. Sorry for the delay in my response I've just been shaking the toilet water off my phone, Mrs x

We also evolved to learn empathy for animals, understanding of nutrition, understanding of just how badly our habits are destroying our planet, and (for most of us) plentiful and ready access to food.

If phones are fine because we evolved to learn how to make them, then all of these arguments are true and "we're omnivores for a reason" sounds a lot like you trying to justify your position when you don't really believe it.

If that's what I'd said you might have a point.

We didn't evolve for cars or parliaments or mobile phones. And yet I bet you still use (or are governed) by them.

As I am not making such a stupid argument, I am not going to get rid of my access to modern transportation, because I realise that evolution is not a justification."

Its not a stupid argument at all, we did evolve to eat meat. What has that got to do with 'evolving' to use anything man has made to better their lives. I'm not saying we have evolved to 'use' anything. I am saying we have evolved to eat meat, that's not my opinion its a fact. But good luck with your beliefs, Mrs x

"Responding to "eating meat is cruel and killing animals causes them suffering" with "well is it ok to kill on a smaller scale" is a bit like saying "murdering everyone in Manchester is barbarism but killing just _naswingdress is cool, right?"

what the fuck man. I can't even

Who has said that?

Gingerspicebomb asked what you think about subsistence hunting and smallholders farming for the table.

Given you've focused on the cruelty of raising animals for meat, I can't see how any meat consumption is in any way compatible with your position."

But he might have a genuine answer that points to the reason why

Potential the hatred of factory farming

Knowing what goes on inside factory farming and being involved personally in smallholder farming for the table I know what should be given the green light

I’m not just someone sitting in a city thinking they know the deal

We are Omnivores because that's what was essential, over a vast period of time, to ensure our survival as a species. I'm not saying I have no sympathy for animal cruelty but eating meat is an evolutionary benefit to our species. It's required but due to our higher intellect, given to us by eating certain kinds of meats, we can chose to eat whatever we want. So I cannot have an opinion based upon scientific theories, such as Darwin's on evolution without it being 'ridiculous beyond measure'. You do realise that unless you are one of the gifted few, the Einsteins, Hawking's, Newton, Darwin etc of the world and can come up with a new scientific discovery, you may, like the majority of the earth's population, take your views and opinions from taking an interest in what these giants have said. I cannot understand if it's just my comments on the work of scientists like this or the actual work of the scientist themselves that is 'ridiculous beyond measure".

Every creature on Earth has gone through the process of evolution. Everyone had found a way of living that suits their species at this given time. This includes their dietary requirements based upon how evolution has determined their anatomy and what's then required to keep them alive.

I'm not saying it's not cruel to animals, I'm not saying we shouldn't look for better alternatives to managing things for the betterment of the planet. All I'm saying is that as a species we are 'DESIGNED' to eat meat as part of our own evolution.

As a side not I cannot see what you have against indoor plumbing,

I think if someone wants to try vegan/veggie, that's great and it all helps and some may carry it on afterwards.

It's a good way to get people talking about the it having veganuary and there's so much more choice of food than there was when I first went vegetarian. So there's something for all.

This is the reason you're arguing that eating meat is valid.

If you're doing logical consistency, you'll argue that we've co-evolved with cholera and to walk long distances and kill our own food, because that's over 90% of human evolution. If eating meat is right because it's how we've evolved, so is cholera.

At least be honest about why you eat meat. It isn't because of science, it isn't because of evolution, it isn't respect for evidence or clever people or all the other stuff you've said, it's because you like it.

I eat meat because I have medical issues that can't really be managed without it (yes, I've tried, don't at me etc). You eat meat because mmm bacon.

We won't be joining the vegan thing 100%. We are quite a veggie family though, we only eat meat once or twice a week.

As we have children, we wanted to make sure they're exposed to all sorts of food, have a healthy balanced diet that includes veggie and meat based dishes with the odd maccies treat thrown in.

I can live without sex, but can't live without meat.

I was vegetarian for a full 2 weeks period once in my life, because a girl I liked convinced me.

Vegetarian slight chance, but never could go vegan.

I've never tasted any good vegan food.

Much less choice, especially if you want to cook.

Some tasted okay on the first bite, but then a disgusting after taste (processed).

Vegan meat substitutes are kind of weird.

Both in taste and the idea to copy something you don't want to eat.

Also full veganism isn't just about food. Clothes, lifestyle...etc.

The basic concept is good, but ...

About environment...

Never met green people riding bicycles regularly.

I will admit to being an over eater of meat. As a child growing up on farms in Ireland meat was a daily staple. I enjoy meat. I'd go as far as to say, at times, I savour it. I look forward to it.

But....

Like a few others here have mentioned, I am also trying to do at least one day meat free. Who knows, one day may turn to two and so on.

All I have said is:

I like meat,

You can choose whatever you want to eat,

But no getting away from the fact that we, as humans, are designed to eat meat.

Thought I was honest but I'm wrong apparentley.

And can you explain the part of what I have said which is contradictory. The absence of which would invalidate your 'logical consistency', something which even Aristotle would agree with, depending on which model of logical consistency you are referring to, Mrs x

If you believe in evolution - as do I - then we weren't at all designed.

You're arguing that there is a justification for doing something because we've evolved to do it.

Why is eating meat ok under that justification, but living with cholera or refusing to drive cars isn't?

If you want to make your position to be correct because of how we've evolved, we probably need to get rid of housing, healthcare, writing, all sorts.

Evolution is design, by our environment and competition.

I cannot understand your point about cars and cholera, whats that got to do with evolution.

If anything it supports the fact about our design and evolution. The reason any new pathogen is potentially so dangerous to us as a species is the fact that we have not had time to evolve to the threat. Evolution takes a very.long time.

It's a FACT we have evolved to eat meat, we have canine teeth, there is no essential carbohydrate, yet there are essential fats for life as a human.

What has this to do with housing and writing.

Every animal alive to day has evolved, do they also have issues with writing, housing, driving or existing with cholera, even though cholera is a lfe form itself and has ergo undergone evolution.

Just as an aid to any further posts, it's always useful to have facts to back up what you propose. Having a point in a conversation makes it easier for the reader, Mrs x

"I love animals but don't have any issues with eating meat. In reality, most animals that are used for food purposes wouldn't exist without that purpose & if the world suddenly became vegan all of those animals would become extinct.

On the other hand, it would be helpful if more people did reduce their meat consumption, it would be really positive for the environment.

Cal

Cows, pigs, chicken and sheep would not exist??? Where did they come from then?"

Ox, Boar, Asian Mouflon, Red Jungle Foul. All domesticated (or commercialised) animals stem from selectively bred "Ancient" creatures.

"I said we have been designed to eat meat.

Whether that's a 'need' is based upon an individuals own choice.

You quote a report from David Katz, a vegan friendly doctor, of course he is going to advocate a vegan diet.

I could ask forumites to research the vast amount of reports in favour of any diets but won't, if you are interested you need to read up and decide for yourself.

You say that keto starves the brain of its energy, as in carbs. So when that happens why doesn't the brain die, if starved of its food source? That's because the brain can, and is successfully so, by ketones. You failed to mention there is no essential carbohydrate needed by humans, there are essential oils though.

Carbs and low fat diets have been subscribed since the 50s yet obesity has continued to sky rocket. That's because protein and fats, in particular, have been demonised.

The increased intake of carbs, which are sugars have also seen a massive rise in type 2 diabetes.

So I'm not saying a vegan diet is good or bad, what I am saying is the a higher fat diet is very healthier than was thought a few decades ago,

Mrs x"

We haven't been "designed" to eat meat - just because we can eat meat doesn't mean we're obligate carnivores like cats. We've been designed to eat animals exactly as much as we've been designed to eat plants. It doesn't matter though, because we have the agency of choice.

Okay, if you read the article, he doesn't say "vegan diet is best diet" (and that's not what I'm saying either).

Surely you realise how your own argument works against you - "there are no essential animals for humans". Essential fats can come from plant-based sources. And just because we can survive on no carbs doesn't mean it's good for our health.

I'm not sure how you think protein or even fats have been demonised in comparison to carbs. Trans fats are criticised, yes, but that's based on scientific evidence. The same applies for saturated fats (which incidentally happen to be present mostly in animal foods).

At not point did I say we are not designed to eat plants, we are. The Keto diet advocates eating plants. But nothing too high in carbs.

You mention fats Saturated and Trans fats, with Trans being the worst of the two. Trans fats are found in fried food, pastries, margarine etc. Saturated fat is found in meat but its normally at a low level.

You say just because you can survive without carbs doesn't mean its healthy yet you don't show how. Jordan Peters on survives very well on a pure carnivorous diet, and what ever your opinion on him he is an apparently smart guy.

It is healthy, as hunter gatherers, before the introduction of agriculture, humans lived on a high fat, protein rich diet with some carbs.

The increase in carbs happened during the farming revolution, with the increase in wheats and grains. As a species we have not had enough time to evolve and see these types of food as an essential part of our diet.

It's true you can obtain essential oils from certain parts of a vegan diet such as nuts, seeds, flax etc, which are also allowed on the Keto diet. However you will struggle to get enough of them following a vegan diet, particularly Omega 3. You really need to eat fatty fish to obtain this.

So I believe that the Keto has many more benefits than most other dietary options, Mrs x

I guess it depends on the reasons why people are vegans I guess. If it's because of consensual reasons then yes, some vegans would consume as the donor is consenting to their produce being consumed and if consensual nobody was exploited or harmed during production

I guess some might not consume it because cum is a product of a mammal after all. I guess there could be issues with the ingestion of sperm but sperm isn't sentient or have conscious thoughts

You do know methadone keeps people addicted for many years more than heroin, right? Most folk who subsidise one for the other remain hooked on it for decades... Whilst a cold turkey quit of opioides might at the time feel like 'dying', nobody has ever actually died from heroin withdrawal, unlike alcohol. The chemical imbalances in the body/brain cannot cope with high level alcohol dependent withdrawal in the same way... All of the above have naff all to do with become a vegetarian?... So, I'm not sure on your point?

I love to see people exploring new ideas and modern ways of living and reducing their impact on the environment - if anyone needs motivation, just think of the world your children will inherit ...

Happy to help if anyone needs any recipe /meal planning tips

The daily dozen app is a great tool for checking you are eating the right food groups and getting a great selection of nutrients, minerals +vitamins.

Vegan food doesn't have to be difficult, time-consuming or boring... And whilst processed food is readily available and can be a great help when transitioning, its not necessarily the most nutritious so keep it as a treat, rather than a staple.

A recent study discovered that people are a lot more open minded when food is called plant based vs almost totally close minded when the word vegan is mentioned interesting!

Happy veganuary to all those exploring - i recognise this thread is pretty hostile, so feel free to get in touch privately if you want to ask any Qs etc

"What about the fact that as a species we have evolved to eat meat to survive.

We are Omnivores for a reason, Mrs x

I find evolutionary arguments to be ridiculous at best.

We didn't evolve to use phones. Please flush yours. So you don't believe in evolution, ok????.

So you only use a belief system then?, Mrs x You are right, we didn't evolve to use phones but our brains did to enable us to invent phones.

I'm not saying you are wrong for your choices but purely from an anatomical perspective, as a species we are designed to eat meat, that's undeniable, Mrs x"

I'm afraid tgat us actually scientifically incorrect.

We are not actually 'designed to eat meat'.

We have become opportunistically flesh eaters over time.

Primitive ancestors were canabalistic and preyed on infants and children.

Omnivores would really eat raw flesh if we were being pedantic .

We do not possess true carnivore canines either.

Either is fine. Most people reduce their meat intake afterwards with some going vegan in time. I think that perfect is the enemy of good.

Fun fact. a plant is alive when you cook it or eat it. So if you want to eat something that is not going to suffer, eat meat as it's already dead

As a horticulturist, a plant is not alive when it is harvested.

Your argument is fatally flawed there.

So you killed it upon harvesting?

Opposed to when cooking?

The closed minds and lack of actual research on this thread is really quite embarrassing.

It would even help if some displayed scientific or medical knowledge.

But basically we get

'I like meat and I'm eating meat because we always have so there.'

'You kills plants and other animals die when we grow plants'

It's very embarrassing to see.

And,

I'm not even vegan .

"No, not for me.

The animals killed to grow plants and crops & stop them being eaten/damaged still happen, it's not all sunshine and rainbows to get those veg and alternatives, plus the fuel, transportation etc, it leaves it's mark too.

Mrs

Are you referencing the deforestation of the amazon for soy production?

No I'm referencing the local farmers shooting the rabbits/pigeons etc for damaging their crops.

The whole soy production I've zero time for.

Mrs

Oh i see - so you mean that you boycott bread and vegetable production generally in that case?

What about crows being shot at lambing times (amongst others), foxes killed to protect chickens and badgers being culled?

Does that just leave you with pork?

Genuinely curious!

No I don't boycott it, I'm just aware it happens and for Vegans too, only I can admit it and don't try and pretend otherwise. I don't try and paint a perfect picture of something far from perfect.

The Mr is out shooting these animals for the vegans that try stating no animals are harmed, it's laughable really, I mean at least acknowledge it's happening and it's not without it's flaws & death.

Mrs

No i can't believe that you genuinely believe what you have said lol vegans live in the real world too, not some fairytale land lol

I suspect your hubby shooting them for a commercial profit making organisation rather than a vegan

You know that vegan's make up a teeny proportion of the UK population.. Maybe 2-3%?? I'm not altogether sure. "

There's no commercial profit in his shooting other than protecting the crops.

I find it laughable you can't admit animals get killed for your crops too!

I'm fully aware animals die for my food, again I don't claim otherwise.

It does seem many vegans so not live in the real world.

"Do you like animals?

I said it was incorrect that a plant was alive when cooked or eaten as suggested by another poster.

You suggested by your comment that I'd kill a plant when harvesting rather than by cooking it.

That does not really make a strong argument.

I asked if you cook live creatures and found deem that acceptable.

The implication from your comment would seem to be that killing vegetation and cooking is ok and the same as killing a creature.

As I previously said, I am not vegan.

The question mark at the end of my comment is because it's a question not an implication.

Still how you get canabilism from that I'm lost, still awaiting an answer as to how that question equates to me eating humans?

The number of animals killed due to agricultural practices is substantial. Billions of animals, including insects, rodents, and other smaller creatures, are impacted through activities such as crop cultivation, pesticide use, and land clearing. These figures are more challenging to quantify precisely compared to those directly slaughtered for food consumption. The impact on smaller animals and insects often goes unreported or isn't as readily available in official statistics.

Moral of the story : if you want to consume without killing animals eat air or mud

A huge quantity of crops grown in arable farming are grown purely as animal feeds.

This is absolute fact.

From a farming background and a horticultural one, it is just how it is to sustain the huge meat trade.

It's a lovely idyllic picture but animals do not live grazing in fields and have happy lives in little farmyard at all.

People need to research a little.

I'll stick with just a little bit of meat.

I do grow my own cruelty free veg though!

No monoculture planting so it's better for nature, no ploughing ground dwelling creatures into the soil every year (moles, voles, field mice, frogs toads......) no shooting vermin like deer, rabbits, pigeons, hares, corvids etc over my crops, no poisoning of rats mice and moles etc by the hundreds, no insecticides killing insects by the ton, no fertiliser getting into water courses causing blooms of algae and choking out the water creatures. There's a hell of a death toll farming veg and other crops so I like to grow a lot of my own.

I'm not saying you are wrong for your choices but purely from an anatomical perspective, as a species we are designed to eat meat, that's undeniable, Mrs x

"

What I have said is scientifically true. As Ominvores we evolved to eat meat. We were not opportunistic meat eaters, we actually went out looking for meat. We hunted other animals, we put effort into it so that doesn't sound 'opportunitic' to me. Chimps actually hunt and they do not have our intellectual capabilities. As for our canine teeth, they are an example of evolution in that they evolved in response to our dietary changes.

As for the cannibalistic issues I am not going to go into that.

As for eating meat raw, we most certainly did initially. The cooking of meat came later. As a species we are still evolving and there are examples within our own bodies that show we have evolved to eat meat, Mrs x

There is a far larger death toll of creatures for the commercials meat production market.

All of what you saudvin the production of the animal feeds and hay/silage and haylage for winter and then add to that the slaughtered animals themselves.

Everyone is eating far too much meat and it will not be sustained forever.

People need to get off their ever increasing arses and make changes.

It is very likely that they do not really have any another good argument .

The reality is that they are closed minded and refuse to change until they are told by doctors or surgeons that they have to do.

Most cling to the omnivore argument with no reference to exactly what proportion of meat there should be in a diet like that.

Everyone who eats meat, its a fair bet, that they are eating far too much of it.

"Humans are designed to eat everything, in fact. I would even say that it is meat eating that made us human, there is a reason why we become deficient when one cut out meat from their diet, nature have planned everything.

Sorry but as someone who has been vegan for more years than I care to remember, it's bollocks to think that a vegan diet will always be deficient. If you eat a balanced diet not just leaves and lentils and get enough B12 it is perfectly possible to get all the nutrition you need.

Where do you get the B12?

Fortified food or a daily spray / tablet (same as vit D). All supermarkets /chemist's, health food stores etc have a wide selection "

Just wanted to add to the B12 thing. The B12 that comes from eating meat is a supplement given to the animal. And some other supplements given to animals also boost the mineral content of meat.

So you can say as in this case, 'eating meat provides b12'. But it's not natural produced in the animal.

I believe B12 comes from soil. With food cleaning methods vastly improved since, say, Victorian times, our now cleaner food prep methods wash away the B12 that we would have eaten naturally before industrial food methods.

Or something like that.

Without making any vegan/ non vegan point I would just like to clarify that this comment factually incorrect.

Ruminating cattle and sheep produce b12 in abundance naturally due to the micro organisms in their gut when grazing on pasture and roughage based diets. (eg hay etc)

When they are supplemented with b12 and other vitamins and minerals it’s due poor quality pasture and is required for their benefit.

It is not given to them so people can have it when they eat meat.

Whatever someone’s view on any topic it’s always better to keep things factual.

I don’t know what you would consider factory farming.

It’s a term I associate more with poultry than cattle, certainly in the UK.

Soya can be fed as a protein source and is used in many cattle rations along with things like molasses, the bulk of the ration will still be roughage, probably silage, these diets are usually supplemented to keep the diet balanced to the cattle’s requirements, different cattle have different requirements.

Conserved roughage can vary widely in its quality and often requires balancing with proteins and minerals to maintain a regular diet.

The supplements are to maintain the health of the cattle (sickly cattle are not productive).

I am not here to promote or discredit any particular ethos, way of life or dietary preference but I do have some knowledge of cattle farming

We are Omnivores, that's a fact. I'm not saying don't eat vegetables, I'm just saying that we are both meat and plant eaters. We are Omnivores because of evolution, this process of design allowed us to adapt, very slowly, to suit our environment and survive.

You go on to say people cling to the Omnivore argument until advised, medically. I'm not 'clinging' to any argument, we have been Omnivores for more than a couple of million years. Like to see anyone cling on to something that long if it was wrong, I'm firmly standing on the fact that we are Omnivores.

I'd LOVE to see where you got your facts from to say we are not Omnivores.

You can eat anything you like, I do, but you cannot deny that as a species we have adapted to eat meat. Mrs x

I'm not saying you are wrong for your choices but purely from an anatomical perspective, as a species we are designed to eat meat, that's undeniable, Mrs x

I would absolutely LOVE to hear of your scientific background and qualifications...Why do I need scientic qualifications? Would I need a physics degree to believe in gravity?

Basically , you should have more in your arsenal of argument because yours is not really that strong.

I did not deny that humans are Omnivores but there is much scientific evidence to show that eating fleamdh was indeed opportunistically and started with the cannibalism of babies and infants.

Primitive man was not the apex hunter hunter that people believe and hunting would have mainly been failure. Meat would not last so would go bad until the next successful kill.

Leaves and berries etc were the main diet until farming started.

It's also biologically documented thst are teeth are not well adapted to being carnivore and that they never were.

I, unlike you however, have both farming and scientific backing.

Excuse me if I just ignore your arguments from now.

They are mainly weak and unfounded in facts to back them up well.

"No. I eat vegetarian/vegan at least 5 days a week already. I don't buy meat to cook or eat at home, the only dairy I ever have in the fridge is cheese and that's often vegan these days, and eggs which I mostly get from farmers markets.

For January the last 4 years I've quit FB and insta, to prioritise my mental health "

I'd say this is certainly a very healthy way to approach diet .

It's good for you and also extremely doable.

We should all be heading this way really but some are too pig headed or contrary to ever consider the health and environmental issues.

I used to eat tonnes of cheese until i watched a documentary ('dairy is scarey' or something)

Not one piece of evidence, I'm not surprised, that's what I call weak. I've not said anything against veganism, its a choice. I've just stated as an animal we have developed to eat meat as part of our diet.

I'm not contrary, I just believe in the works of scientific greats. You talk in contradictions. You dislike what I say but you admit that we are Omnivores, that seems very strange to me.

You mention health, I suppose that's your attempt to suggest eating less meat is healthier but again you cannot point to anything that supports this.

Diabetics who have type 2, are advised to reduce the amount of carbs within their diet. Carbs aren't found, in most meats, in any great amounts. Bread, potatoes, rice all have massive amounts of carbs and are very unhealthy for any diabetics to consume in any great amount. Asian men are statistically more prone to Diabetes type 2 then any other group of men because they eat rice as their primary source of food.

These are all facts you can read up about, it's not my opinion. You can choose to read these or carry on being rude, calling people who disagree with you as contrary.I don't think I have said anything rude to you.

Adding more fat and protein in your diet can actually reverse type 2 Diabetes, something you cannot do by eating more carbs/sugars/starches.

I can offer reams of peer backed evidence for all of what I've said.

You could easily find published papers from surgeons and specialists in The Lancet and others.

It is not very difficult.

I've not disputed tgat humans are omnivorous because they are and I have not said otherwise.

The problem is that they are proven to have started eating animal flesh as opportunistic carnivores -as canabals and when hunting was successful. Not frequently it seems.

Again, documented by many scientists.

It is very possible to eat a vegetarian or vegan diets and not really increase carbohydrate intake at all.

I often do not eat carbs despite being not vegan.

It is well documented and peer reviewed that the majority of meat eaters are far to reliant of meat in their diets and many doctors and surgeons point to the consumption of red meats as contributing to cancers and heart conditions.

The British Heart Foundation advises to cut consumption of red meat and especially with a diagnosis.

Cancer patients are advised to avoid red meat also.

Doctors , surgeons and nutritionists invariably advocate reduced meat diets with increases in whole grains and leafy vegetables.

This is also published and peer reviewed - an area I am very interested in so I am well aware of vitamins, minerals and dietary relevance of vegetables, grains and fungi.

As you were.

The canabilism in early hominds you talk of has just had a report published from an Australian uni, want to say it's Sydney haha.

We have always been canabils as a species but it was due mainly due to ritualistic in nature. We hunted far more for the meat we ate.

I find it hard to believe that you can wouldn't increase your intake of carbs by eating more veg. So how would you get enough energy without an increase of carbs, given that you advocate a reduction in eating meat. Are you suggesting eating high quantities of said low carbon veg because that would be difficult.

Just ask Giant Pandas, who were originally carnivorous and became a herbivore eating only bamboo. It's why they spend huge amounts of the day eating this poor diet. It's one of the reasons they are going extinct.

There are experts on both sides of this argument, so this is going back and forth with no end in sight.

However all I've said, is that because of evolution we have become Omnivorous, something you have agreed.

The rest of your responses seem just to be an attack on what I'm saying. Saying things like I'm weakly arguing, that you are intellectually and you have expertise in this field, even claiming at one point that I haven't gotten any despite my non disclosure of my expertise or qualifications. I have said you are free to eat what you want but you seemed to have overlooked this.

So I will say it once more we have evolved to be Omnivores. Meaning we should eat meat. Otherwise what next, sharks eating lettuce, tigers eating Kale?

The majority of vegan cheese that I've tried is terrible - there is a company looking at how to replicate casein, which could be a game changer. I use the cathedral city one which is the best of what I've tried
