Lots of authors write books and set them in the future, then time passes and the future catches up faster than expected, I'd assume the 1948/1984 is probably accurate.

original title was "last Man In Europe". The book was written in 1948, published 1949.
The publisher suggested the title be changed to help market it.
No one reallly knows why it became 1984. Some people think it is just a swith round of the last two digits of the year. Others have suggested that it is a reference to the centenary of the Fabian Society which was formed in 1884. The Fabian Society is a socialist organisation. There have been other suggestions as to how the title was arrived at.
Actually went and dug out my old A level notes to find out this rubbish....lol

I did it for O level english, Back in the 70s we saw it as an allegory on communism and how it had lost it's way under the soviet system. I wonder if Orwell is looking down bemused at how much of it has come true. Animal farm has come to pass as well.
