Online gaming crime

On news a girl's avatar was gang r@ped on a gaming site.

Police are investigating.

Although it wasn't a real world crime, personally needs investigation as it's the attitude of the online perpitrators and need at least something that needs the perpitrators identities recorded as potential suspects Incase they do it in real life surely

I find the notion of the (virtual) action pretty despicable, but I do wonder what the line is between "this is despicable" and thought crime.

Take it a few steps away, and do we investigate (say) a novelist who writes about fictional violent crime as a way of teasing out the human condition?

About 3 feet away from the fence

By that logic anyone playing GTA 5 should be arrested due to the possibility of them replicating the gameplay in real life.

What an absolute waste of time.

Yeah I'm not quite sure where this exists outside of small niche indy games.

The closest I can think is verbal abuse with it being stated as they corpse/spawn camp etc

I can see the difference between "I am playing a game according to its rules" and "I am using a multiplayer game to do things against another person that they didn't agree to", although I think the line between virtual and thoughts is potentially too hazy

I had a look for the article & it sounds like it's a VR game.

This is not a police matter. There are real crimes taking place on the streets where people really get hurt.

Its up to the moderators of the game/whatever the fuck that is, to manage the bad behavior by users on their platform. If people are driven away by other players trolling or griefing, then their platform will suffer as a result.

It's also up to the users to decide when they've had enough by removing the headset. Something victims of real life crime cannot do.

Imagine how angry you would be if tying up resources with shit like this is the reason why they couldn't find the people who mugged you for your phone.

I'd also be pretty angry if I was a victim of a "real life" crime and I knew that there were a bunch of warning signs online which, if addressed, might have prevented my victimisation.

As far as I’m aware this is an old story

There’s nothing in the game coded to allowed that to happy

It was more then a bunch of guys surrounded her character

It’s nothing and no criminal case will be brought

However, there is an issue in gaming where girls get treated like shit. I play online sometimes and if ever a girl join the team the atmosphere changes and it’s very common to just have gross, sexual behaviour from the guys

It’s a combination of an almost entirely male user base + the anonymity of being online

Many girl gamers are afraid of using in game comms for just that reason. They get treated differently and get abuse

If you are a gamer, it’s your job to stamp that shit out. Kick and ban people. Don’t ignore it and if your the type to join in, kindly fuck off elsewhere

Can’t remember the lady’s name but she did a massive girls in gaming campaign a while back and highlighted the amount of abuse women get on gaming platforms

The extent certainly varies from game to game. But that's not surprising.

The more mainstream things like fortnite and first person shooter games are definitely hell for women to be a part of and join in. But you can tell that based upon the attitudes of most.

When it comes to poor attitudes in gaming, while not exclusive to them it is definitely more of the younger (teens and 20s) that have the bad attitudes. Older games, while not perfect are much friendlier in general.

The further you get away from the popular "cooler" games the better it is for people of all genders and ages.

There are some shitty attitudes online, but I'm not sure what the answers are.

The Town by The Cross

I don't see it as a waste of investigation time. It's a bit naïve to think that your local police officer or the Matrix will be taken from the usual duties. It should be investigated and it will probably be investigated by the appropriate personnel.

I see it as an historical phenomenon. No use shouting about metaverse crime when the problem is simply gender inequality and man's inhumanity to women in all spheres of life .... domestic, sport, commercial, gaming, teaching, science, writing....... people need to synthesise and focus instead of dividing daily events into disparate chunks and writing small stories. It's ATTITUDE
