It must have a reason to be there. Through eons of development, we haven't lost it, so it serves a purpose. But what is it? Hygiene? Prevention of disease? A show of virility? Where's Dave Attenborough when you need him?

It is believed by primatologists that while the great apes were covered in hair as a means of keeping warm, the hair around the groin grew thicker as a way of disguising where the genitalia were. This would mean that if a male was attacked it reduced the chances of injury which could lead to being unable to procreate, or lead to the animals death due to blood loss from an injury in an area with a large collection of veins, arteries and capillaries.

That all sounds good but I just made that up.
