Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Do you do it knowingly or do you look back and realise you manipulated a situation?

I d say I might be "accused" of that relating to my children's education - I did use some gentle tactics to get them to make what I believe better choices when they were younger.

I am sure that would be classed as parental guidance and no one would think badly of you for that.

I would like to agree with you, however, there were parents at the time who felt it was wrong to do so, that children should follow what they wanted to do.

No.

I negotiate prices for customers so use every trick in the book to manipulate people. Its not personal though.

That made me think (and I agree with you!) that we probably do a lot more manipulation than we might think we do. Everytime somebody is a little extra friendly, extra polite - it may not be out of a desire for personal gain but perhaps to make another person happy. That is a form of (beneficial) manipulation, isnt it?

Every time we use emotions to get a benefit its manipulation. Its not always intentional or meant nastily, but its a part of life.

Exactly what I mean. I have been examining my behaviour and looking back some things I have done I now see as a manipulation. The motivations for some may not have been as pure as I thought at the time or maybe it was just that I was habituated to behaving like that at the time.

I am left wondering if every action, every behaviour has an element of manipulation to it.

"Do you do it knowingly or do you look back and realise you manipulated a situation?"

I am terrible for it. Sometimes for good reasons. But I am good at it too.

Done well I think most of us don't notice it. It really is a talent or a skill.

I think most people with a modicum of intelligence know they do it at some time. Its human nature after all and part of what separates us from animals.

Every action we take, every word we speak (starting to sound like a Police song here...) can affect or influence someone. That can be intentional, accidental or a side effect. It's not always manipulation and not always even seen.

Yup, I would have been on the 10 week waiting list, bearing in mind I have been waiting since December I have pretty much had enough...

Yes undoubtedly I do from day to day situations to more in depth relationships its what the intelligent mind does rather than physical doing things.

I think everyone does to an extent but those who are good at it climb to the top of the corporate ladder as they are seen as people who can get things done.

I didn't realise the Police were singing about CCTV. There is an estate that allows all tenants to tune into their local CCTV cameras on their televisions. Neighbourhood watch without having to twitch a single curtain.

Is professional manipulation essential? Is it 'better' or more acceptable than relationship manipulations.

I think we are all guilty of doing it. Most ppl know they are, some ppl don't realise they are, but still, we do and I don't think we would ever stop. Not if it works to our advantage !!
