I recently got 2 letters 1 to tell me I was entitled to a tax refund and 1 with a cheque for the amount stated in letter 1, how ever we went away for a short break for a week and when we got back there was letter No 3 informing me I had paid enough tax and that they would be changing my tax code to clear this up, how can the Tax office issue a refund 1 week and them take the bugger back within a week |

And the very same thing happened to us. But you only have to read in the press of how dysfunctional H.M.R.C is. Unless of course you happen to be a multi national. |

Challange them. Yrs ago when I got married we went in to tell them. Hubbys tax code changed some mths later they told us they had calculated it wrong and hubby owed 1k. I wrote a snotty letter to them. They wrote back agreeing we had done nothing wrong and it was their mistake and they wrote it off. |

Take your point, but very few people can go into their local tax office these days. Most tax offices are the other side of the country. And trying to phone them can be an absolute nightmare ! |

If you get a letter informing you that you are entitled to a tax refund, then get a cheque sent to cover that refund....it is then perfectly normal for there to be a third letter with details of your new tax code....pretty basic run of the mill stuff. |

I would contact them directly and ask for an explanation in full as its making a mockery of the system. |

Cash the cheque and see it as an interest free loan. Spend it on 2 all inclusive tickets to Hedonism III and put the other ticket in the name of Raymond the Bastard and I will love you forever. |

"No the letter was to inform me that I had not paid enough tax so they were adjusting my tax code to rectify that"
So they made an overpayment to you in the form of a rebate?.....then it's akin to your bank telling you that you have £1,000,000 in the bank instead of £1,000....
Has to be repaid somehow
In your case it's to be repaid over the next tax year?
