Are you boastful in life or does it make you cringe?

I find being around the energy of boastful people when they are being boastful very uncomfortable. Like they're trying too hard to show how amazing they are.

This can cause issues at work as I feel I am often overlooked for the work I do as I don't go around shouting about what amazing work I am doing. Then I get pissed off when people get praised for doing stuff I just merrily get along with doing lol

I feel this makes me look dismissive of their achievements and like a bit of a bitch

Or maybe I'm just a bit of a bitch ...who knows.

Delightful Bliss

I prefer to be self happy and not need praise from others for stuff I'm good at. As the bosses do recognise me and my capability, so I get special treats, over the ones who constantly seek admiration

I typically dislike boastful people's behaviour. I'm fine with being provided information neutrally but not via boasts. It's tedious and disengaging.

I think our culture with all the marketing and advertising has made it necessary, to some degree. Always having to put the most positive light on things, making claims that imply things that aren't necessarily true. A lot of big claims by companies and public figures are probably true enough that you can't sue them, but otherwise are a load of boastful waffle.

Social media makes it a bit shit too - everyone sees the one photo where you manage to get Billy to stop ripping Tammy's hair out and look at our angelic children, and you never get a hint that the kids are brats and the parents drink too much and the grandparents stomp boundaries and won't stop teaching the kids racist bullshit.

The real arse aches are those who boast about being a proper grafter, and suddenly become a bustle of energy whenever a member of management pay's a visit

I did wonder recently if what we consider boasting is different for each generation? Sorry to jump on your question.

Jump away!! I like conversation that evolves.

It possibly is and maybe boastful isn't want I mean but I can't think of it any other way lol

Being proud of what you do and achieve is all well and good and should be celebrated but when it's run of the mill job stuff I just think 'fuck off'! Lol

I'm a bit the same about people who have to show how cookie they are or how crazy their life is even though I do tell people about some of my exploits etc.

Someone at work trying to shock me with their sexual exploits for example just won't engage me in a conversation cos I just think 'so what!' even though I have quite an active, varied and non conventional sex life myself. It's the fact they're trying to prove how shocking they can be.

I dunno.....just stuff in my head while I'm bored working from home lol

Some people don't engage to engage with another person. They engage to get a reaction. They might as well find a chatbot that spits out impressed lines

I've been prompted by conversations with my teenager! still not the wiser.

It's not a quality I find attractive but I do like humorous boasting in a work environment keeping heading down and letting the results speak would be my way. It's frustrating when the work culture isn't nurturing that approach.

I dont like it , but also dislike fake humility too.

Guess I’ve done pretty amazing considering where I started and do amazing on here too, but I’m not ‘proud’ of it as there’s far more important things like character & integrity often in abundance in the least successful people

I don’t talk about myself, I prefer to sit and let somebody talk about me

Seriously though, quite often I sit and enjoy asking questions and finding about people, listening to the things that they’ve accomplished, and are proud of in their lives is a way of finding out about somebody. I’m learning their lore

But you’re right, OP, that’s also those that are just big headed, and you can sense that sometimes.

It makes me cringe to be honest

There's a couple of boasters who I've seen use the forum too.

I think social media makes it easy for people to give off a certain vibe /image.l,if that's how you want to be seen.

I think some people on the forum view - in some ways correctly - forum boasting as a way to get ahead and get what they want.

I see it as part of the culture we find ourselves living in, for good or ill.

It depends, people who are proud of accomplishments should rightly be so, people being arrogant over random crap that isn't an accomplishment is just annoying.

Boastful was once seen as an American trait and modesty a British one. However people under 60 are generally more Americanised/boastful/narcissistic/superficial due to the rise in social media and Reality TV for the last 20 years. I actually feel an idiot if I was doing a selfie.

I downplay. I’m useless with praise. A friend said some really sweet things about me and I blubbed. They were true, no hyperbole but still.
