"Could be set at any time of the year. Not a Christmas movie."
So could lots of Xmas. Movies, just replace Christmas with another national holiday and there you have it. Even Christmas Carol is easy to make in to an Easter movie.
Die hard has just as much right, in fact even more right to be an Xmas movie that It's a wonderful life.
In fact die hard has more to do with Christmas than even White Christmas. |

So it's a Christmas movie because it is less not a Christmas movie than other so-called Christmas movies. |

An Easter Carol?! Nahhhhhhhh. The "message" behind the Scroogery doesn't fit into Easter. And the songs would suck ass.
But I agree DH IS a Christmas film! |

It's not Christmas he hates. Well it is but it's not just Christmas he hates. He hates people and all year around. It just so happens to be he had shitty christmasthrough his life. Replace that with any other time, even his birthday being shitty and it still works.
It's not about getting him to like Christmas, it's about getting him to be a nicer person. You can remove the Christmas backdrop and the story can still happen any time of the year. |

I mean the whole "keep the spirit/meaning of Christmas now and at all times of year", which is what Mr Scrooge decides to do, after being haunted x3. Easter has a different flavour. There's no real "spirit" of Easter, unless promising to keep thinking about dying for salvation, a spot of crucifixion and suchlike are up your street?!
Basically, a Christmas Carol works with the whole spirit of Christmas thing and how good, kind, benevolent people influence a miserly one positively. And a spot of good, Christian "but you'll be chained in hell" too.
But yes, lots of other films could be de-Christmassed and still work.
I'm not sure Home Alone could. Being alone at Christmas is extra bad (in society's eyes) and that whole journey home to Chicago for his mother would've been a piece of piss in the middle of May! |

But you just remove the spirit of Christmas stuff. The plot of the movie still works regardless of Xmas, the plot points still hit which is exactly the issue people have with Die Hard - despite it also being able to be interpreted about a man doing all he can and risking his life for his family to be together at christmas. Scrooges story still works without Christmas. |

Definitely a Christmas movie... it's not Christmas until you've seen Hams Gruber fall from Nakatomi Plaza!!
Back in 2015 when that meme started doing the rounds my (now ex) wife and I polled our Facebook friends to determine which was the best Christmas movie: Love Actually (her choice) or Die Hard. Naturally Die Hard won so we watched that and I posted a photo to Facebook of Hans Gruber falling from Nakatomi Plaza.
The following year we watched it again and while we were watching it I looked at Facebook memories and realised that by chance we were watching it on the same day in December! So ever since then December 19th has been Die Hard day! And this year my eldest was old enough to watch it with me as well
It's got to the point where a friend at work is doing it by proxy... it's not Christmas for him until he's seen my post about how it's not Christmas until I see Hans Gruber fall from Nakatomi Plaza! |

"Christmas Movie or not? For me…absolutely…tell me otherwise…yippe ki yay"
No.
Christmas is not essential for the plot or any character arc/growth.
A Nightmare Before Christmas is a Christmas movie, because moral of the story is...
“No matter if you fail at delivering festive joy, the effort is all that matters”
Die Hard has no Christmas moral.
Die Hard could be set at anytime of year & you’d have the same film. |

"If Stay Another Day by East 17 is a Christmas song then Die Hard is 100% a Christmas film.
But it was released in November and was actually Christmas No1 in 1994"
And has no mention of Christmas and is about suicide. |

Die Hard could not be set any other time of the year for a number of reasons.
1- they need the hostages but not a full building, limited security on too.
2- when else would there be a low number of workers inside that have the info they need other then an Xmas party. There wouldn't be.
3- they need the quiet streets, ie when everyone's home for a discreet get away and also to enter the building without being seen by many
4- the quieter time for a slower response from police due to lower staff numbers
5- they need everyone to have their guards down, so when people are tipsy or not really switched on because they least suspect anything to happen christmas eve
Also there's the 3 main chriatmas themes to all chriatmas movies
1- hard working parent having to go through hell on Christmas eve to be reuinted with family
2- the moment at the end, where it snows (well paper falls and looks that way) on the 2 in love.
3- there's a Christmas miracle... as in he some how survives all that and saves people
(Can you tell I was sat on a loading bay for 5 hours yesterday already having this discussion elsewhere) |

John McLane throws a guy off a building and generally shoots everything. Fact doesn't change that it was not released near Christmas so is not a Christmas film. |

Scrooge (1951) with Alistair Sim is the ultimate Christmas movie (and best version)
But other ‘feel good’ movies from this period qualify. The Card (1952) with Alec Guinness and Petula Clark (still alive) and Hobson’s Choice (1954) a brilliant ensemble cast including Prunella Scales (still alive)
So many superb British films from this era that knock spots of all the American dross from nowadays.

Set at Christmas time, has snow, has Christmas music, it's about being alone from family at Christmas and ends with the star being reunited with their family at Christmas.... Sounds like the plot for at least 90% of all Christmas films so yep, a Christmas film! |

The definition of a christmas movie is that it should be set within the festive season. The release date of a film has no bearing as to what makes it a, Christmas movie. "It's, Wonderfull Life" wasn't released at Christmas time
It is up to the individual as to what they decide is actually a christmas movie.
So on the basis that Die Hard is a christmas film then On Her Majesty's, Secret Service also comes into that category as this is the one James Bond film set during the festive period

No. If it is then by the same logic, so is Lethal Weapon.
For a movie to be a Christmas movie, it needs to have been marketed and advertised as one, during its original release. Die Hard wasn't in any sense of the word.
It's a film, some like to watch at Christmas, but is it a Christmas film is the normal traditional sense? Absolutely not. |

It's been a debate for over twenty years, I don't think it'll be put to rest on a swingers site. |

Parade com has Die hard at 6 and Gremlins at 8 in their top 16 80s Christmas movies
I guess that is due to popular opinion.
Just cos Bruce Willis was in it, doesn't mean he get the deciding vote.
How anyone can say Gremlins isnt a Christmas movie is beyond me, Gizmo is literally a Christmas present. What else do you need?
the fat man, reindeers, elves?

Godzilla minus one is a Christmas movie! Plus all 3 lord of the rings. American sniper. The Disney star wars trilogy. Titanic.

The best way to answer is
There's Christmas films, where films are centred around Christmas Eve/Christmas Day with the final act usually being Christmas Day.
Then there's Christmasy films, which are films based around the Holiday Season, and display various little elements of Christmas; Christmas decorations, songs on the radio etc.
Is Die hard a Christmas film? No. Is it a Christmasy film? Yes. |

Yes. Christmas things in Christmas movies. Just because someone gets a birthday present in a movie doesn't mean it's a birthday movie
