see I disagree..I havent got one now.. but I have had a few in the past.. and they enhanced my car.

People always knew it was mine... and as I was into my cars and went to car meets a lot this was a normal thing.

Saying that my show plates had my forum name on for the clubs..

In my experience, some items not available in Tescos or Morrisons are probably quite expensive as they are in M & S.

I would not do my entire shopping at Waitrose or M & S - in fact I shop at Lidl and Aldi for some of my groceries and then I buy stuff from M & S and Waitrose for other goodies. I have not really noticed Waitrose being more expensive across the board?

I would suggest you do a full shop on My Supermarket and see what the difference is! It will amaze you... Maybe one or two headline items are cheaper, but I will guarantee that overall, Waitrose is by far the dearest!

I've seen that car and had similar thoughts!!! Can't remember where but just remember thinking 'you twunt'...or something similar!

@OP - I don't mind private plates if they mean something, but some just seem to be there for the sake of having a private plate...plus they can be a ballache to sort when you're relying on Car Salesmen and Joe Public to get the paperwork right. So glad I don't do admin anymore and just flog the cars now!

Who cares if Waitrose is more expensive than other supermarkets?....They have their own market and are fulfilling the needs of their customer base....the same as Aldi and Lidl are.

I am not overly excited by it because I'm not interested in cars but the men in my family are. Up to the individual what they spend their hard earned money on. The men in my family can't understand why I have 2 double wardrobes and a walk in closet filled with clothes and shoes

I always though it was a choice how you spend your money, granted some get jealous of those that can blow money this way and seen many a change of attitude once the haters get one! Comical to say the least it is but life is full of irony but that's life, some will always get irritated and jealous of others that can do what they can't.

Rather than dissing your life choices, may I just pose a question:

Why? My bro in law has one and my bro does too. Both of them on just ordinary five year old production family saloons.

Btw I love em both, don't think they're wankers or tossers for this reason. Maybe for other reasons, but not this reason

I know someone who has a private plate but when they bought a new car they transferred it to their other car as they wanted to make sure people could see they had a new car through the new number plate!

Does this mean that a new plate has more kudos than a private plate?

Why are people so quick to say "it's a waste of money" or "they're for tossers"

All I can think is it must be jealousy. There is nothing wrong with being successful. I make no apologies for it.

It seems it's only located here (the UK, not this site lol) too, this jealousy. The amount of times people have said to me "I bet u don't get many miles to the gallon from that" or "not much boot space in that is there mate" you wouldn't believe!

In the US if you drive a nice car, people congratulate you and ask to have a look.

And yes, I have a private plate, it's a sign of my personal success.

I get the same with the car never mind the plates it just makes me smile as I know many who spend more on cigs and binge drinking than I have on plates. I don't complain at people spending money on things they choose to its their choice although if someone went and spent 3 mill on a Caribbean island that would be a waste.....oh no that's me being jealous.

Never really bothered anout it, some plates are funny, shows you how up tight most poeple are in here, but the. I did buy one this year, only because it was perfect for my Yamaha r1, I got it very cheap and I plan on selling it to make a small amount of money on it. It is clearly worth double what I got it for.

As I've already stated above, I haven't got any issue with people who buy them, just as I would hope they don't with me. I simply asked what's it for. What's the point? I am asking out of polite curiosity.

Can't say I would rush out and buy one but I don't find them distasteful like some people do.

To me, they are purely a way of personalising your vehicle as opposed to them being a status symbol.

"Why are people so quick to say "it's a waste of money" or "they're for tossers"

Well said I have same things said about car plus the normal 'why have a soft top in this country' answer is I like soft tops and private/personal plates

Where I judge other people it's by MY experience of THEIR lives and all too often I find it's style over substance.

That 'style' all regularly manifests itself in what they mistakenly believe to be shows of wealth, in a futile attempt to impress others - private number plates, wrist watches the size of saucers and similar.

As Burns put it - 'the man o' independent mind, he looks and laughs at a 'that.

Absolutely not. What people spend their own money on is entirely their own business.

The fact many of us find what they spend their own money on to be quite hilarious is purely coincidental.

You sound like my cousin and he has a really small cock and shouts loud too.

Aspirations to be like others are fine but ugly jealousy is naff and doesn't make you look big or clever.

You seem to have a real problem with how people choose to spend their own money at times.

Where I judge other people it's by MY experience of THEIR lives and all too often I find it's style over substance.

Ok before this thread gets too big, I will ask politely for the last time:

Why - what are they for? In all the silly name calling that's gone on here, nobody answered.

Please don't respond with it's my money so it's my business. We can all say that about anything.

I'm a musician. I could sit here all night and give you the reasons for why I do it and what I get out of it. That is all I'm asking really. Nothing too heavy peeps, we're supposed not be having fun here right?

Why? Well because you can is the simple answer.

What for? Well it adds an ageless element to your car and some are car specific ones which look better if you take your car to shows.

Its a bit like asking why people swing as a couple as you already have a cock and cunt at home.

well, after reading almost all of this thread , I thought to myself, what the feck is going on here. What is the problem?

Private number plates, individuality, bit like tatoo's or purple shoes. Its a bit of individual personality that shines through in a dull world.

Good luck to you, seems you bring a smile to the faces of other road users. xx

That just about sums up the supposed argument on the 'private plates are a good thing' side.

If you don't agree - you have a small willy.

Maybe we should all live in a tent and hide our money in a shoe box, just incase we accidently spend our money on something that might make us look like where trying to impress. Radical i know but maybe people spend money on things because its what they actually like and not to impress people. I actually feel a bit sorry for you

I copy this for no more than the sake of posterity and the fact I know not what pitty is.

Just as aside, in some parts of the country, a cock and a willy are much the same thing.

I have a friend who bought a plate with her first name on and paid £5500.00 for it. She has now sold the plate 5 years later for £25000.00 ! Not a bad investment !
