I always do that and I also do it during the festive periods. I change what I say like, during christmas it was a happy christmas greeting and to the new year, it was happy new year and have a nice day, sometimes it leads to a little conversation, it is fun

You can tell a lot by the way a person treats someone they don’t need to be nice to
I always treat shop workers with the highest respect. They’re doing a job like anyone else |

"Yep manners cost nothing
100% this
Plus you never know what their day was like. Might cheer them up "
Or you may make it worse because they want as little interaction with others as they possibly can.
Everyone assumes that greeting is welcomed and wanted when in reality the main thing is just don't be a twat with your behaviour. |

I agree with a large extent with what is written above.
It is not 'manners' to talk to staff. Manners are hugely subjective and on here and in life generally it is one of those words to cast shame on the behaviour of some and drag them into conformity.
I'm a human being. I enjoy human exchange. If they seem as if they have the wish to converse I always chat.
If they don't seem to be in the chat zone or are very busy and we don't 'click' in that second then we don't make small talk
I wouldn't judge them either way. We navigate life and behaviours by the second there's no point in thinking everyone is you.
To be honest..... in an 8 hour shift , how many times must they hear things like .........ohhhhh I only came in for bulbs...... or have a nice day ........ Or smile it might never happen.
If you HAVE to talk it's for YOU not them, try to think of something original to say. |

The majority of the time I really enjoy chatting to the staff.
I actually really enjoy chatting to most people. You never know who you'll meet out what influence they may have on your life. Or what impact your politeness might have on theirs. X |

Is it? Maybe for you. Otherwise it's an assumption that it's nice for them. Some people don't want to be there, they just want to get on with the shit they have to do.
Imagine if every person said hello to them, one after the other.... all day... Everyday.
Granny expanded on it very well as usual. |

Always do.
Apart from a lady at Aldi who I have a huge crush on and too shy to even say hi to
Love the awkward bit when they buy alcohol and jokingly look at me pretending to calculate if I'm over 25 |

I think greeting someone giving you a service. Whether they want it or not, is always polite
It’s the bare minimum we offer a human. Recognition
Unless they have a sign up saying don’t greet me, it’s the absolutely bare minimum to just acknowledge they exist |

I work in a shop so I'm often on a checkout.
I speak to everyone,hello, please,thank you.
Some days that's all I want to do,I don't want to chat any further but when you say hello to the person and they look at you blankly and ignore you it's as if they don't see you as a person.
I'm usually a good judge of if someone doesn't want to talk so I keep it bare minimum but I always try to chat to elderly people, even I don't feel like talking myself. A little compliment or something.
You might be the only person to chat to them that day.
I don't know if it's an Irish thing but it's more rare for someone to not speak to you than not.

I was reading the other day, how in the Netherlands they were trying to reduce loneliness. The Jumbo supermarket chain now has chatty checkouts in lots of its stores.
Customers who would like to pass the time of day with the cashier without being rushed can join a special yellow lane to buy their groceries.
I thought this was a great idea which they should think about over here.

Not always.
There are a small number of checkout staff that have conversations with the next till operator, while ignoring their customer. I won’t bother greeting those. |

I find it hard not so say a hello at least. Not endless chat unless they initiate which is often the case. It's the same with please and thank yous, it boils my piss when I hear people ordering things without a please. Mind you I also wave to acknowledge people that stop at zebra crossings for me.
It ain't hard. |

Yep,I pretty much always talk to the check out staff at Tesco, Lidl or Aldi when I go. Your standing next to each other for about 5 mins and just ignoring each other, to me, would be weird. So I've kind of got to know them a bit, more like if I saw them in town I could say 'hiya' and they'd know who I was.
Other shops when it's something quick, I always say hello or Hiya and especially at this time of year say Merry Christmas.
It doesn't take much to show a bit of interest and it's nice to be nice. That's me anyway, and on that MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone......I'm sorry, it's just I'm excited!! ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

All of the above. For me, a smile, a hello, a thank you and a goodbye is plenty. But we're also reading you - the customer. We're gauging if you want to chat and how much you want from us. Some customers just want the bare minimum politeness, others are craving a little bit of human interaction |

I like to ask them what boxset they're watching. It's a little bit different to talking about the weather and so on. A lot are really into some programme or other and get really animated about it ![](/icons/s/2/cute.gif) |

Always polite and say hello, etc. When i have my kids i play a little dad joke of asking if they bought their wallets to pay, then when they say no I ask cashier where the brush is to sweep the shop. Never fails to get a smile. |

It’s quite normal to talk to strangers everywhere in the UK except London. Of course we chat with the checkout staff. ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

I always chat to the checkout staff. Especially if the queue is massive and they are feeling pressured. I once worked in a charity shop and after working on the till for an hour or so I got to feel the pain of impatient people. It completely changed my approach ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

At the least, a smile and a hello. More if they are chatty. It would be weird not too.
But as was said above, I’m always disappointed if they keep chatting to their adjacent colleague.
