Distance is based on the postcode they put in as their location. The bit below it that says how far right now is based roughly on their actual location according to their mobile phone network - it only works for people logged in on a phone.

It registers as the postcode you enter on joining, but with mobile users it registers your phone moving around I think. It isn't always accurate. Sometimes it shows people as really close to me, which means they are in a field in the dark. A couple of times I have messaged them, and they were a few miles away. |

Yes, that has a bearing too and also if they have enabled permission for Location Services (GPS on Android). |
