Spring is nearly here...almost at least....which made we wonder if there's anyone else out there that enjoys the odd bit of back-packing, or day hiking....the Lakes or even the South Downs or Ridgeway all spring to mind.... |

I'm not one for walking holidays, but in our town there is a river walk that runs all the way through it and ends just behind our house, and it's lovely walking round it with the baby and the puppy |

Absolutely....I'm not only a 'fairweather' walker either, and it's good to see some others that are similar...I guess I assumed that most people wouldn't perhaps be so adventurous as us! The Lakes and Wales are indeed beautiful - especially if there's a nice pub at the end of the trek, and either a snug tent or camping barn to follow! Have you ever tried the South Downs Way? It's a little easier to get to compared to other venues, and actually quite stunning at times too! |

I do love a good walk, whatever the weather (although sun certainly helps raise the spirits!). Living in the Lakes puts me in an ideal spot for it, too. Nice to take the camera out and do some landscape photography. |

I prefer the old map and compass rather than GPS etc. I carry a GPS in my rucksack but its there for emergencies only, never used it except when I got it to test it worked hehehehehehe

Half the time I just use the map by day. At night use the compass to keep me on track hehehehehehe

Put spare ones in....only use charts at sea....trully in trouble out there when GPS packs in.
Great skill to have and I admit I take an os along on proper hikes. |

Did the Yorkshire three peaks last year! 28 miles(made a mistake on the route) and I thought I'd make things interesting with my 60L bag full with all my spare clothes, food, water and tent. I was a broken man afterwards but ill be doing it again this year! |

I've done the bike race several times and have walked all of them individually but not in one go. I'd planned to walk it solo last year but illness prevented it. It's a beautiful part of the world.
And while it;s always better to be over prepared 60kg is a crazy amount of kit! |

There's no way I'd be doing the bike race over them, I'd be off more times than I'm on the bike.
Ohhh no not 60kg my bag was a 60litre bag although by the end it felt like 60kg!
It is gorgeous up there even when the weather turned on us it was still beautiful!
If you do it and camp the night take an air bed(probably the only thing I didn't take) it was sooo rocky and uncomfortable |

Coming down Ingleside on those rocks in the wet oin a cyclocross bike is a case of not thinking too much! Coming down Pen y gent with hands cramping and brakes failing can go horribly wrong.
The first time I did it there was about 5 metres visibility on the tops of the hills and it was blowing a gale,, pretty scary!

Once I've recovered from the hernia op I've just had I shall be getting out and doing the Yorkshire 3 peaks trek again. It's a stunning if somewhat tiring old stomp. Also wanna crack at the welsh 3000's. |

Camping from tomorrow after work for 6 days, and I hope to walk a bit with the dog, at least to and from the camp site to the city centre which is about 2 miles away. |

"Gutted as walking season is over till October , bring on rain snow and ice , far too warm and crowded for my mountaineering taste. Shall still be camping though x"
LOL - so no lowland walks on warm (hopefully!) summer days then? |

I could do with getting my lardy arse out for a walk... I dare say summer has been and gone (it was on Saturday apparently) but hopefully we'll have some sunshine to come. I've always fancied doing a bit of the West Highland Way. |

Hey! Less of the lardy - I'm sure it's perfectly formed! Given the interest in walking on here perhaps we should put a group together to do some of the West Highland Way! |

Haha! I wish for perfect formation! But I'd be up for a wander up/down/over the West Highland Way... not in the rain though, that would suck! |
