Do you get more conservative as you age?

The question came up on a utube commercial and it got me wondered to ask you about it.
It isnt anything political, so being averse to change or innovation and holding traditional values.
I am just 41 so not that old. I would say that I am a mix of it. I like to hold traditional values and also open for change to learn new things.
What is your view and do you agree with that you get more conservative with age and are you it?  |

It's difficult to answer, because if society is changing around us are we oldies getting more conservative or is it just relative to youngsters being more 'liberal'?
However, if I had to guess about me personally, on some things are am getting far LESS conservative (I was religious for the first part of my life) and other things I am more conservative.
I don't tend to hold to traditional norms regarding things like gender, culture, etc. However, I think ps and qs are important, don't swear around children, pick-up litter and don't go to the shops in your pyjamas.
So, yeah, I don't find it an easy question to answer!  |

Young people tend to not have built much wealth so are more likely to lean towards progressive views, because socialism is perfect when it’s not your money getting handed out
As you get older and start to get the things you’ve worked for. A career, house, nice car etc etc
Suddenly progressive ideas of socialism become less attractive, because it’s your hard earned money being given out
It’s just picking what suits you
Socialism is great when you’re young and dumb and looking for someone else to bankroll your youth.
But this is a very limited view of conservative bbw liberal/progressive through the lense of socialism, which is only 1 tiny part of what it means to be conservative vs liberal.

I’m 54 and also like to hold on to traditional values. I’m very open to change but I won’t change just for the sake of it it has to be for the better.
I’m still learning, whether that be in the gym or at work. I’m about to apply for a new role which will be a very steep learning curve.
So in answer to your question no, I don’t think I have become more conservative with age

I think the population in general do, if they became less conservative then the Tory party would struggle. However in the over 65s 45% of them are intending to vote Conservative at the next election, the only age demographic where they hold the majority. Personally I have the opposite view! |

It depends, what are we talking about? Spending money? Making a lifestyle change?
I’m a mixture, I’ve become wiser as I’m older, and I’m less of a dickhead than I once was…

Definitely the opposite. I am aware that my shelf life is limited and I have come to realise that I have to go and grab life by the balls, make changes, take calculated risks and do things now - or I may not get a second chance |

In the sense that you want to protect what you have, yes. But in core ideology (personally) no.
But since the left and right have both drifted further to the right over the last 20 odd years anyway.....I've lost my point |

Quite the opposite, I’ve become more left wing as I’ve aged. I’m now in a position where I have a little more money available to be able to help others. Far from being bothered that my tax goes to help those fortunate I’d be happy to pay a little more.
I contribute more to charities, both financially and with my time, than I ever did when I was younger, and socially I’ve become more liberal. I see the damage that unfettered capitalism has done to the world, and the stupidity of blaming foreigners for the problems created by the rich.
I know that success is as much down to luck as it is hard work, so I’m thankful for the good luck I’ve had, and would like to help those who have not had the same good fortune.
I embrace the chaos of the world far more than I used to, and I try very much not to cling to the past as a if it is some golden time. It wasn’t, I just had fewer responsibilities and my back didn’t hurt.
The world belongs to the young and I don’t want to hold them back, as far as politics goes Conservative voters are literally dying out, and I’m glad the younger people are gravitating even more than they used to towards the likes of the Greens. There’s no way the billionaires who own the media will ever allow any true socialism to take hold in the UK but if we can get to a point where the NHS is CV properly funded and higher education is free, then I will be happy.

Heavy morning read, but well worth it.
You've got me thinking...
I like to think I'm open to change but I find it frustrating when change is expected of me when I feel my values are rooted in being a good person and respect.
Others said it best but for me... the world is changing round me and my changes are selfish to suit my world position.
I'm looking to secure my future for my family and try raise my son in the values I was taught. So as the whirl wind happens around me. I find myself being that sick in the mud sometimes and holding a bite that is challenged.
Great thing btw we should all feel challenged sometime.

Are we talking politically or in terms of life?
I think politically it’s probably more linked to class and financial well-being.
In general I think people become less conservative with their actions and attitude as time goes on. |

Totally with this. At some point capitalism will become obsolete, I think the end is in sight, and if we don’t replace it rationally and in a planned way Mother Nature will do it for us. I live in hope, most of the time anyway. |

I definitely am the opposite to what was considered the norm.
I seem to be getting more liberal as I age. Or perhaps it’s that the conservative are getting more right wing and I’m staying where I was.
Slightly right of centre, although as I say these days I feel like I’m slightly left of centre. That could be that parties are all shifting to the right and my opinions haven’t changed. Or it could be that I’m moving left and slowly becoming a communist. |

If you are talking about life then I am conservative in somethings and constantly changing in others. I think as you get older you realise that a lot of the stuff that you used to think was_ really_ important is just ephemera and completely irrelevant and younger people will look at you as “boring” and “out of touch” when you don’t get excited about the latest fad.
If you are talking politics then I have literally no idea because none of it makes any sense to me anymore and I can’t make head or tail out of _any_ party.

Thejob I do makes me change attitude values and have to change my views for my job. Working in this profession is hard but I can show my values in my work.
I value my skills and knowledge and still learning at 53.

Yes and no, but not conservative in a political sense. In fact, I’m probably more open minded now than ever before and I expect to continue to shrug at ever more scandalous behaviour.
I am more risk averse. Less included to take chances and do the dumb (dangerous?) activities of my youth.
I also have vastly different ideas on what’s important in life now than I had as a younger man.
I am still relatively young so it will be interesting to see how I continue to change. |

People have historically been seen to become more conservative politically but surveys have shown more recently that that trend is faltering.
I'm less tolerant of some things as I age, typically the behaviour of others that I interpret as lacking in respect for others who they impact. In the UK paradoxically, the conservatives have been amongst the worst for imposing harm onto others, so it's not been helpful in shifting me towards their mindset  |

I am an oldie at 69. I personally have not got any more conservative in my old age in politics never voted conservative and never will. In real life I'm definitely not conservative I'm more outspoken than ever |

As for socialist spending other people's money - are people really that daft
All governments spend other people's money it's called tax revenue, we all pay in it's simply a question of how that money is spent.
Do we spend it on, affordable housing
Hospitals, health & nutrition, transport things that cost but make community"s a better place.
Or do we give big tax breaks to industry in a bid to encourage business to come to the UK,and be told it trickles down.
The latter does not make any sense to me partially when we have sold off a lot of business abroad.
So it's a no from me to becoming more conservative have you not seen what they have done and what they represent ?
The UK has become an absolute shambles.
Question is do we value our proud UK by it's prosperity and standing in the world economic structure or do we value it by it's growing poverty, homeless and hunger

All governments spend other people's money it's called tax revenue, we all pay in it's simply a question of how that money is spent.

I always see conservative as two separate entities, Conservative, as in Tory or conservative, as I confirming to established or traditional values. Not long ago, many if not most workers of a Labour bent were pro death penalty, corporal punishment, anti foreigner, anti womens rights etc, respect for the law etc. In my youth, these were conservative, with a small c, values. |

I have always been conservative with a little c, as conserving the world and not changing just for the sake of change seem quite good aims to me. I am fairly liberal with a little l, as hoarding resources and preventing meaningful change seems wrong to me. I am generally in favour of labour with a little l, provided that those working are allowed fair recompense for their labour, and that those who are unable to for good reasons are not forced into work or die choices.
When I was younger I felt that Conservative with a capital C politicians were callous but not totally cruel, but the ones we have now uniformly seem to be Cunts with a capital C. The Labour with a capital L party went through a period of losing their way, but now seem to be the only hope for restoring ethical beliefs and making Law with a capital L that serves all instead of just the privileged few. As for being Liberal with a capital L - although possibly closest to my core beliefs, this seems to be fairly futile without major changes to our Democratic system. |
