Hard not to develop a fondness for the distilleries you've visited. Highland Park, Scapa, Aberlour for those reasons. But so much wonderful Speyside whisky on offer where I am at the moment. Thoroughly recommend GlenAllachie & Benromach.

The Spey is bursting past in full flood at the minute, and it's pleasant to contemplate how much of its water will become something finer.

The Jura cask edition whiskies are very nice.

Penderyn Welsh whisky is good too.

All the above on various special offers at Tesco and Sainsbury's.

I'm quite partial to Dahlwinnie winter's gold too

If it's not heresy to ask in this thread, what would be a good Japanese whiskey to start with?

I’m a gin drinker but Winter Gold is the 1st one we bought for ourselves when at Dalwhinnie. I normally buy for my dad. Got him a 1st release bottle of Hearach from Harris for Christmas he doesn’t like them too peaty.

Some of favourites are:

J&B (the classic!)

Dewars

Highland Park: Viking Edition.

Jameson: Stout Edition.

Johnnie Walker: Gold Label.

Pogues: Single Malt.

Cutty Sark: Prohibition Edition..

Bushmills: Black Barrel.

I have about 60 different brands, and these are ones I like which sprang to mind first.

Somewhere off the edge of the map... 'ere there be monsters

For scotch my fave is Highland Park 12.

Irish, I like Jameson Black Barrel, Green Spot is also very good (I wanna try Yellow Spot but I’m not rich, lol)… but the one to beat for me is Redbreast 12. It’s so good!

If bourbon I like Woodford Reserve, Wild Turkey 101 and Buffalo Trace for everyday sippers / cocktails, but the one to beat at the moment is Elijah Craig 12 year. I really wanna get hold of a bottle of Blanton’s for my collection, but the hipsters have inflated its price and rarity too high.

I’m not a whiskey drinker. But… last week a very expensive Hibiki Japanese whiskey hit my taste buds and that was pretty damn smooth. And pretty damn expensive too.

Jack Daniel’s would probably be my go to, and the Honey one, with a dash of lemonade. Because I don’t appreciate a whiskey enough to not want a drink that’s drinkable.
