With the price going up thinking of cancelling mine. Never watch live TV or i player.
Just wondering if there are many on here who have already canceled their licence and if they have been hassled much.
I've heard sometimes they do come to your door and try to verbally force their way in but you just say no and you don't need the licence? |

30 years ago when I was a single mother and couldn't afford to pay for the licence. They took me to court and fined me £100+court costs. I've had one ever since, even though I rarely turn the TV on these days. |

As long as you NEVER watch live TV then cancel it. If you fill in the declaration you'll not get any hassle from them. Just don't be tempted to watch the odd live sporting event or anything on I-Player. K. |

I cancelled mine by email in Feb 2021, the website is so convoluted I just used the email. Saved the emails and ignored any letters, a bloke did come to the door maybe 18 months later. I spoke to him from an upstairs window as I'd just stepped out if the shower. He started off being quite forceful until I said I'd cancelled it by email and he was welcome to look at them once I was dressed. He immediately accepted that and promised to update my details. Never heard from them again and didn't have to open the door to him |

The TV licence is very outdated, when it was introduced (only bbc1 available back then) it was technically a tax for owning such a luxury item.
You need if you watch ANY live channel, this includes sky, virgin, BT etc. you also need one if you record any live TV to watch later. You don't need one to watch any catchup TV, netflix etc. Unless its BBC Iplayer.
They will know what you have been watching as everything is digital. If an inspector calls at the door he cannot enter your property unless you allow him or he has a county court warrent.
however if he can see a TV through a window that is in use then thats enough
If they have evidence that you should be paying the licence then they can summon you to court and if found guilty its a fine. Failure to pay the fine can result in prison.
I rarely watch live TV but pay the license as I couldn't be bothered with the hassle |

No, you just have to follow the steps. Then just don't watch any live tv and nothing on iplayer. Then you are compliant. I didn't get hassled at all once i signed and sent in the declaration. You have to do that every two years i believe. |

Nope, the "detector vans" are bs so I can watch whatever I like without paying it. Just throw a VPN on you should be set. They can't enter the house anyway so I just ignore them at the door. |

Not had one for over 10 years now. I simply never watch live TV or any of the other criteria to warrant a licence. I simply tick the "no" box on their letter every 2 years. Easy as that.
I've never had anyone come knocking. If they ever do the script would read..
knock knock
Me: Hello?
TV: Oh sorry to bother you Sir, I'm here from TV licensing and..."
SLAM
That last bit is me shutting the door. Do NOT get into ANY conversation with them. Do NOT say ANYTHING, as tempting as it is.
Apologies to any TV people reading this, I appreciate you are just doing your job, but I for one just do not need your cold calling salesmanship. |

You don't need to go that far. Just shut the door. No need to say ANY words to them at all. Nothing.
But fair's fair. If you do watch live TV then purchase a licence. Don't go to a restaurant or the barbers and walk out without paying etc...
But if you genuinely do not need a licence then do not get into ANY verbal communciation at all. No need to. |

I don't watch television and don't have a licence. Never been hassled apart from letters, filling in the forms clears it up. If someone came I'd let them in. I don't own a television and have got nothing to hide. |

I let the swat team in. Last time it turned into a gangbang. |

You have to let them know you don’t require one or they will try to make a claim against you.
It’s easy enough and I’ve never had one in my whole life.
I’ve not had a visit from the tv inspector since about 2005 so I’m not sure they bother anymore once you opt out. |

As more and more people are doing this, the bbc are responding by changing the way it’s funded. They are proposing to abolish the licence fee and replace it with funding from general taxation. That means that everyone who pays tax, will be paying the fee indirectly, irrespective of whether you watch tv or not.
It would seem that by hook or by crook, they will get their pound of flesh. |

Not had one for 9yrs, I stream everything, don't even have aerial connected. BBC, ITV etc broadcast nothing of interest to me, only thing likely to watch his rugby and go to the pub for that.
If an inspector calls they cannot gain entry to your property. Even the police dont have the right to do that unless they hold a warrant or if dealing with a domestic disturbance and they believe someone is in danger inside, or they are in pursuit of someone.
The TV tax is outdated and the BBC should be made a subscription choice like all other forms of media. |

That’s not what’s on the cards, they want their funding from general taxation. It’s a uk government controlled corporation and it will be funded as all the other government follies, if they get their way, and I’m sure that they will.
If it was funded by subscription, the amount of state control would be reduced. |

As there is other channels on the freeview side of it.
i do believe a mast charge should be added to the council tax bill of say 50.00 a year.
I know alot of people wont like it but its payed by every household to receive the freeview signals.
as goes for the tv license its no longer value for money and bbc should swap over to adverts.
if they can pay this £1,350,000 and £1,354,999 linikers pay for 2hrs for presenting football they can make there own money.
as goes for digital they cant detect it unless you go online and go direct to the bbc website.
if they dont get you with the tv license they will get you with the radio license as older sets still receive bbc analogue signals.
if you do inform them it shows a red flag on your address a prime address to be harrassed all for them to prove you are using there services |

"It also covers radio and podcasts too
I think the BBC is very rare to have TV and radio that makes shows without pressure from advertising "
It doesn't cover radio. You can listen without a license. |
