The Town by The Cross

Not been for about ten years so I don't know if anything I say would apply.

Back then we paid for trips every day through operators only to find that the local buses were dirt cheap. See if that still applies.

Quite prudish back then. We couldn't enter building with our shoulders bare. It was considered disrespectful so we always carried shawls.

Oh ....it's fucking hot .. FUCKING hot and dusty and brown.

Great places to eat out. All cuisines, at the time we found the 'non maltese' to be the best. Might be different now.

Go to the Blue Lagoon.

The fireworks

Valetta.

Go diving- We have pics of us doing that ..... uhmmmmm

I just remember swimming a lot and eating lovely fresh med foods. Not much Maltese food tho ...they tend to do a lot of med. If I remember rightly mussles and rabbit were Maltese national dishes.

Don't sign up for trips through your tour operator. The local buses are cheap, and frequent. Even going to Gozo, you can do that so much cheaper independently.

I spent the day at a water park and zoo, was fantastic.

Traditional dish is rabbit, but being such a small island the sea food is lovely. I ate king prawns there for the first time ever.

There is some amazing history in that little place. I love the churches, if you want to visit them make sure you take something to cover up, they are very strict about what tourists where in them. I bought very pretty shawls from the market to wear.

We where there back in August , and it was bloody hot , as others have said use the bus service , they used to have all the old 1950's buses but now its all Arriva buses , they are air conned and regular and the main station is near to Quawra. A day in Valleta is good and if you want some more life in the evening head to Paceville on the bus , and their is a return night bus too . Also try the Buccaneer bar for food wich is just off the main square in Bugibba ,hope you enjoy yourselves .

I haven't been to Malta since 1992 but we had a wonderful time there.

The churches are lovely, Valetta and Mdina are great places to visit, boat trips to Gozo, same as what other people have said really.

They did have lots of religious festivals and we went to Valetta one night and got caught up in the whole festival atmosphere. People were carrying statues of Jesus in the streets, fireworks, singing, music, a brilliant carnival evening, hopefully its still the same

It might be cold now though. I go regularly for work and the last time I was there was November when it was quite pleasant.

The traffic can be a bit mad so try to avoid rush hours.

Ditto the advice given.

I've been to Malta 3 times and had a superb time on every visit.

The "old buses" have all but gone except for a few "heritage" routes; ARRIVA got the contract to run their transport networks 2 years ago, made a hash of it to begin with, but things have improved a hell of a lot since. You can check their website in advance and download maps and other details.

Mdina, the "Silent City" is well worth a visit. Valletta is too; if you want a small history lesson, there is an interactive exhibition centre with a 20-30 minute video presentation on the history of the island in Valletta Old Town. Mosta with its famous Dome is also worth a visit. Marsaloxx on the southern side of the island is a charming little town, a bit sleepy in parts, and very good, if expensive restaurants.

The Blue Lagoon is a must. A post suggested Fiesta's, yes, the Maltese love them and there is always a major one going on in some part of the island every couple of weeks or so.

They take their religion very seriously; if you have to visit any church, chapel or even a cathedral, they will invariably, ask you to cover up bare arms and legs; the ladies may well be asked to wear a headscarf too. The bigger religious places keep a small stock for tourists to borrow for their visit. Also, in religious sites, ask first of you can take photos; the artefacts and murals need to be protected, and the locals get very particular about flash photography.

If you MUST hire a car on the island, beware! Their driving is crazy, rules of the road are ignored more often than not and if you are unfortunate to have an accident, no matter how much you think or knew you were in the right, DO NOT drive off until the Police have arrived. If you were to do so, the Police will automatically assume you are to blame!

A Maltese friend of mine says that the local unofficial driving rule is "to drive on any side of the road as long as it is in the shade!!"

The Maltese love the British and will welcome you with open arms.

Have a good holiday!
