It’s approaching the time where the world celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, our lord and saviour. We remember that Jesus taught us to be kind to those with less than us, and to help those in distress.

What’s going on guys? It’s all over the news.

What's going on is apparently (I heard somewhere that this is an actual complaint in some churches, can't remember the source) the liberals got into the Bible and fucked it up so Jesus looks like a pussy. We can't have that. Give that man an AK-47!

I do what I can but unfortunately can’t help everyone.

Not because of Jesus though. I don’t believe in all that

Very few people have ever taken any notice of that.

In fact quite often they justify their actions as sanctioned by God and as Jesus is his boy it follows that he's ok with it.

I wonder how many people think about jesus on Christmas day? I know I don't. My parents used to set a place for him at the dinner table when I was a kid and remind us on the morning what the day was really about.

I grew up very religious and the excuse tended to come from a verse in Romans "for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God". I suck, you suck, we all suck, all sucking is equal (insert desire to put sex joke here) therefore if I'm a selfish shitheel it doesn't matter because all humans suck. Pass the mash and fuck the poor.

I genuinely believe that if Jesus came back now he would be horrified by Christmas, churches, religion, the lot.

If Jesus came back now He'd probably end up on one of those ultra pious political shows about how His actions are causing the downfall of good honest Christian society.

I was always taught - not as a replacement for literal Second Coming etc - that Jesus lives inside you and you should honour Him in what you do.

(When you weren't using that verse in Romans to be a shitheel etc)

If people need religion to teach them to be kind, they are doing life wrong.

My dad thinks that too and that he's always watching. Poor thing if he has to watch me .

It gives my dad great comfort but I try to limit my discussions with him to infrequent interpretations of bible text rather than our actual beliefs or lack of because it would lead to arguments.

Sadly, I think if Jesus came back today he’d be considered a woke communist. All this being kind to strangers, throwing the money lenders out of the temple, and turning the other cheek stuff is just woke and people who engage in it should go broke. Which is ironic given that it’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter heaven.

Not that we believe in it of course, but then neither do people who call themselves Christians, it would seem.

Some Christians are very good people but a lot of them aren't. The mission my dad's involved with do some excellent work within the community but they also do some stuff overseas that I don't agree with or think is very Christian

the powers that be in the church would not want him to come back and spoil their cushy little number they would probably denounce him as a fake and a charlatan

Certain apocryphal gospels were excluded from the canon version specifically because they quote Jesus denouncing an organised religion.

The council of Nicaea was a power grab by decrying certain versions of history as fake news. Nothing has changed, really.

Yes, you'll notice that that's what I'm doing here - this is what I was raised with, etc.

I think there can be an admirable example read from the Bible if you choose to - but it's also very easy to ignore, as we see from the actions of many churches and their congregations. (Not just Christians - we're all prone to hypocrisy. I'm focusing on Christians because this is the focus of the thread. That Romans verse, Swing edition "for all are capable of being shitheels and falling short of their claimed moral authority - but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try")

couple, us we him her.

I remember taking in tins and other goods for harvest festival at school is this still a thing?

Aren't most schools now trying to make Christmas "inclusive" of all religions downplaying Christianity in favour of not wanting to upset anyone?

I can't see Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and other religions watering down their national cultural heritage/holiday for fear of upsetting the Christians.

Nativity concerts with robots and dinosaurs FFS.

It was three wise men with inappropriate gifts for a baby,a magic star and stinky donkey and a woman who lied about being a virgin, plus some grumpy old bloke running the local boozer who refused to let a couple of freeloaders to stay at his place for free so they broke into a stable and slept in horse crap.

Ahhh the true spirit of Christmas God bless us everyone aaahhhhhmen

I keep hearing about people being ‘offended’ by Christmas but I’ve never actually seen any evidence of it. Hindus tend to join in with everyone’s celebrations, and with Jesus being the second most important prophet of Islam I can’t see the Muslims being offended by the celebration of his birth.

Maybe they would be offended by the rampant commercialism? Although it strikes me Christians should be more offended by that than anyone.

Agreed. The people who most water down the "meaning of Christmas" are those who use it to get pissed, eat too much, and spend too much money, rather than those who believe in other god or gods.

Yeah, there’s a lot of people for whom the spirit of Christmas comes from a bottle.
