Not his work, but when I hear Carter USM Prince in a paupers grace I always thought of Shane and his drinking:
In a bar Johnny drinks
Johnny drinks Johnnie Walker
Till he runs up a bill he can't pay
He's drinking to the memory
Of a prince in a pauper's grave
And it's go Johnny go
Where the bruises don't show
In the church yard where the nervous get wrecked
And turn off your wireless
For two minutes of silence
Cough up and pay your respects
And go to the park
Where vicars and tarts
Prey for their tormented souls
By the American graffiti
From Elephant and Castle
In Ford Capri Orange
And Volkswagen yellow and gold
Johnny drinks, Johnny drinks,
Johnny drinks Johnnie Walker
Till he runs up a bill
The Pope couldn't pay
Cockles his muscles alive alive 'o
Smashes his bottles of unholy water
And it's go Johnny, go Johnny go, go, go
Back to the churchyard
Where day out and day in
Those original sinners
Are religiously praying
And where there was muck
There's a brass band that's playing
Playing to the memory
Of a prince in a pauper's grave |

""A Pair of Brown Eyes" from Rum, Sodomy and the Lash is one of the finest things that any band has ever recorded.
The Late, Late Show will never be the same.
Bye bye Shane."
Came on to say similar.
The perfect song. RIP Shane McGowan you legend. |

Met him a few times when I was in university in Dublin. He was in a fairly shocking state even then, and I’m stunned to look back to those times and realise that he was barely 30 at the time.
No idea how he lasted another 35 years, but had the pleasure of seeing him perform many times … Dublin, London, New York |

"Great songs, proper character and what an entertainer..
His version of Waltzing Matilda is emotionally haunting..
Thank Shane, Rip fella.."
That’s a song I have heard performed by many singers, and his version was out on its own. |
