Will appreciate some recommendations for a used first car. It's going to mainly be for socials and commuting. I am looking for a brand with good MPG and super easy to maintain. Top of my list are
Skoda Fabia
Renault Clio
Toyota Aygo
Citreon C1

Citroen. Avoid them all.

Hyundai i10, cheap, reliable, good mpg and fairly decent tech, they also come with 5 year warranty from new, so may get a uses one with still a few years left |

I am a bit confused, why would Clio attract a higher insurance, the road tax is quite low and it won't be a new one.
Also confused with your point on Aygo
About Skoda, it seems highly recommended and frankly I am not looking for a "cool" car. Fuel efficiency, affordable maintenance and durability are high up my list, so I take it that you think Skoda is good? |

I had a Skoda Fabia for a few months as a company car and it was really good. All of the VW reliability and build quality with considerably less cost, and there's plenty of parts around for them.
100% that would be my choice out of your list.
But small Kias or Hyundais are great too, especially if you can get a kia with some of that 7 year warranty left |

Haha Honda jazzes are usually owned by little old ladies  they’re like a tardis, can fit so much in! In 5 years the only problem I had was a spark plug went. Everything else was normal running costs, tyres and mots  |

I am a bit confused, why would Clio attract a higher insurance, the road tax is quite low and it won't be a new one.

Thank you. Honestly, I am a buying a cheap as fuck car, pardon my french. Currently doing my postgraduate study and commuting around the North East is so hectic, there's a strike by one or two transport companies every few days.
I want a car that I can use for about a year without much issues. Once I'm done with my program, I don't mind giving it away. |

Any of the cars recommmended on here you can pick up pretty reasonably priced (shop around) and they’re all bullet proof engines they’ll last and last. |

As a general rule japanese cars are pretty reliable,
I'd avoid renault citroen
I liked my focus 
Not sure how big a car you're wanting
Look at what taxi drivers are using for reliable cars

The only thing I'd add about the 1.0 litre ecoboost is to make sure you get a good, detailed service history to show it's been properly maintained as there can be some issues if they've not been properly looked after. One is the wet timing belt. Plenty of information out there - particularly on Ford owners forums, but yes, it's a great engine and is pretty quick given it's size |

These recommendations are all far too sensible.
When I wanted a cheap car, I always went for proper shed motoring. Buying ridiculously fun, but totally knackered, cars and running them for a year until they died. £500 or less, every time.
I think my best shed was a Mazda MX-6. I got a Japanese muscle car with a big V8 for £350 and ran it up to the Highlands and back in the snow for a few months. Then the alternator blew up and I got £300 for it from the local scrappy. |

I actually have an Aygo today as a hire car - absolute rubbish & I've had most cars as hire cars over the years,
I literally put my wellies & coat in the boot & it was full! My overnight bag had to go on the back seat! |

Stay away from anything French or Italian.
Always been terrible and plagued with electrical issues.

Go for the Yaris instead.
The citroen xsara picasso in the 1.6 diesel will give you nearly 60mpg and you can take out any or all of the rear seats individually. It's a tardis.
Buy from inside the ULEZ zone in London. They're going cheap now.
To hell with styling outside. It's what they're like inside that counts. |

OP I can’t comment on exact models but if it is to impress the ladies on a social then clearly what you need is something with a huge handbrake so you can do perfect handbrake turns as you screech into the car park to pick them up. Ladies love that sort of thing.
Big exhausts are also required because everyone knows that the noise they make are actually directly correlated with penis size and we know how well that goes down on here as well.
Throw in some furry dice and your social problems are sorted.

Sorry what do you mean by proper shed motoring? going to the garage and asking what they have to sell? Have you don any of these recently? Car prices are way higher now, even for used |

Highly recomend anything by Kia or Hyundia same cars different trim .on our second kia had a rio for four years was trouble free and cheap to run only needed tyres and service parts in that time despite covering well over 60k .got a sportage 1.7 tdi fab on fuel 42 mpg mixed driving 56 mpg on long runs loaded with toys comfy does all we need and never let us down .they dont come with a 7 year warranty without being able to back it up . |

They’re reliable but not fun to drive. Get something fun. You’re not 18 so insurance shouldn’t worry you too much. Mx5 is always the answer on piston heads. I’m waiting for a 99 plate defender getting kitted out and painted to complete my garage. Always wanted one, wish I got one when younger. How’s the time not to be sensible |

I agree they all sound bad choices.
I’ve only ever rarely driven high end Ford Mondeo’s and basic model BMWs. They’re both great cars - Basic , solid, cheap , reliable. Never had an issue. I think I had 9 Mondeos and 4 BMW so far |

A Toyota aygo and Citroen C1 and Peugeot 10? are all the same car, made in the same factory in Slovakia. All very good but quite small.
Fabians are cheap relatively because not fashionable so probably the practical choice.
Renault only if very cheap.
