when is a village not a village??
Jump to: Newest in thread
It should have a separate community - I live in a village that Sheffield has grown up to meet. We have a choir a brass band a library a village hall with an am dram society and we have an annual fete.
We are also (unlike a lot of villages) lucky enough to have a library, a doctor's surgery, a chemists, a hardware shop, a hairdresser, a post office, a green grocers and a couple of other shops. |

There's one road through our village and if you leave it's 6 miles one way and 9 miles the other way to the nearest towns, although there are other little hamlets on the way.
We've got a shop/post office, petrol station, 1 pub and 1 working mans club, a chip shop, a hairdresser and a farm shop. We are surrounded by fields and it's a really lovely place to live |

We've got a square where the weekly market is.... it has a yearly show where everyone enters competitions like best sheep and ferret racing ...proper real ale pubs and small river runs through it and they used to film parts of Emmerdale here....
Being from a big city it was a huge culture shock but I wouldn't want to move away now... |

No body's mentioned the townies that colonise some lovely villages, like here in Somerset, saying they love village life, but then complaining about the cows, the church bells, the cockerel and there being no decent tapenade available in the village shop. |

I whole heartedly agree with this they move into the country then complain about all the country smells and noises, also I think to classify as a village half the population should be related in some way as it is I our village and your still classed as an outsider even after living there for 15 years lol |

It's a village if you've lived there for 40 years and you're still not classed as a 'local'...or it is if it's the one I grew up in, where my parents still live !
Village Hall
One pub
One tiny post office and a primary school, which bizarrely, still has an outdoor (unheated) swimming pool ! |

"What makes a village a village to you?? Just a quick forum straw poll "
- A pub with no opening hours (knock on the door)
- That you say hello to people in the road
- A Parish Council that writes official letters to you if your flowers become overgrown
- People you've never met can tell you all about yourself
and lots of straw poles |
