I watched 1917 again last night, is it the best war film ever made? In terms of cinematography I think so but what about platoon, killing fields, hamburger hill, saving private Ryan, all quiet on the western front, bridge over the river Kwai, there’s so many others, which one gets your vote

Saving Private Ryan. Apart from Hanks elevating every movie he’s in, there are parts where the moral ambiguity of war is shown really well (eg flamethrower in the pill box scene).

There's a 1960s film that was released on bluray last week called King And Country. It's about a young, badly educated working class soldier who panics in a battle and decides to walk home - despite there being an ocean between him and home. He's captured and put on Court Martial. An officer has to be assigned to defend him. They find one who doesn't like his client, thinks he's a coward, but believes that he's owed a defence so takes it on.

It's a fabulous, small-scale film based on two stunning performances by the actors playing the soldier and the officer.

Hacksaw ridge and We were soldiers once. All the better for being true.

Saving Private Ryan for its shocking reality in the opening scenes.

Zulu for the family connection. Good film too.

Last but not least, a little known film. “Country of mine.” Excellent film about German prisoners at the end of the war clearing mine fields in Denmark. Little more than boys. Seems very realistic.

Not films but Band of Brothers and The Pacific are fabulous. Beautifully photographed, brilliantly cast, scores are epic and they do not glorify man’s inhumanity to man they tell the story with first hand accounts of the hell and depravity of war but the unerring power of comradeship that endured throughout

My personal favourites are Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket and Platoon. Coincidentally they're all based in the Vietnam War. However by all accounts from people in the know, Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket weren't particularly accurate as where Platoon was. With Oliver Stone being a Vietnam War veteran, Platoon was always going to be the most true to life. However they're all great films in their own right.

Not a film, but a special nod to Band of Brothers, which is also outstanding.

My most recent fave was the All Quiet on the Western Front remake. I thought it was absolutely brilliant. Another stand out has to be Hacksaw Ridge. Lots of excellent films in the 'wrong answer' category, glad to see a few got the right answer with Das Boot though

Pearl Harbour (which was focusing more on the love story before the attack on Pearl Harbour) then there is also Midway (focusing on the attack and war itself) both great films!

Pearl Harbour was the film that got me into the war films! So you coul say thatbhad a big impact on me.

Have a look at Tora Tora Tora from the Japanese perspective and it’s a great film.

So many already mentioned I love. But also Europe Europe directed by A. Holland.

An interesting recent watch was: All the light we cannot see. Even though it's mostly historical fiction.

All quiet on the western front is pretty amazing. Recent remake. My great grandfather fought in ww 1, kind of brings home how awful it was. They shall not grow old is a good documemtary
