Pointless knowledge

Over the years I have enjoyed playing racing games, to the point where I now have the layout of the Laguna Seca Raceway etched onto to back of my otherwise empty skull. No matter how long between races, I can always recall the track corner for corner.

So let’s hear it, what are your pointless nuggets of knowledge?

Bonus points if you can mention anything you’d have rather retained instead.

Personally, I’d like to be conversational in one of my target languages as it is a skill I deeply admire, so being better at remembering more of that would be a nice.

Looking forward to reading the replies!

I’ve ’flown’ an F-18 simulator for so long, that I can now recreate flights that real pilots make. Including the completion of full checklists, air to air refuelling, and landing on a moving aircraft carrier, which is said to be the most difficult thing any pilot could attempt to do.

The fricking periodic table song.

I have no need to know an outdated periodic table. I have no need to know any form of it.

Do I know it? Yes.

Why do I know it? Because I decided it would be a good party trick for uni parties.

I'm such a fucking twonk.

I can tell you that YTV's Christmas Line was Leeds double-48199, if that's any good to you.

That’s not rubbish I answered the one question I have ever heard on a quiz show having remembered the first 12 elements on the periodic table

Oh wait it’s been 45 years stored in my head for that one moment

Perhaps a waste lol

Oh and OP, Laguna is the most amazing track isn’t it?

I loved trying to ‘ride’ it on XBOX MotoGp games.

Manchester (she/her)

Murder trials in classical Athens had to be held outside, because the 'sin' of a murderer was 'contagious'

(sin and contagious are close enough for the purposes of this discussion, because we are not going down that fucking rabbit hole ok)

The word sycophant may have originally been a pussy joke, although it could also have been about laws against luxury products in the prelude to Athenian democracy

I could go on... and on and on...

I can remember any amount of useless things from 40 years ago, would be useful if I could remember some things from last week.

I remember the number plate of a big old car my dad had with leather bench seats in the front. I cannot for the life of me commit my own phone number to memory.

I can remember the registration plates of almost all the cars I've owned, plus my Grandad's and Grandma's cars. I can remember a whole bunch of phone numbers from the past and I can recite all the books of the Bible in order, from Genesis to Revelation.

That’s impressive! I feel like a number of the skills would be transferable to real life (if you were planning to be a pilot/instructor)

I have the lyrics to a million songs, but I wouldn't swap them for anything... although there was a mid 80's rap song called "Just Buggin (nothing serious)" by Whistle, that I would happily swap for just about anything.

Haha that could go either way, you’re very unlikely to need the knowledge, but at least you can pretend to be smart

It’s a great track. I have others that I prefer, but I think this one sticks in my mind because I spent so damn long as a kid trying to nail the corkscrew

Exactly the same here.

Spent so many years watching the likes of Doohan, Rossi, Stoner, and Lorenzo, yet I could never anticipate the turn in and always crashed/used runoffs.

So many song lyrics. I do like having a relevant song lyric for pretty much every life situation but I also feel that brain space could be put to better use!
