Long(ish) boots

North West

I'm in the market for some mid-calf or just-below-the-knee boots for winter, because my feet are perpetually bloody freezing (including when wearing Heat Holders sock plus tights) and it's not yet even properly cold.

I've ordered to the house and tried on 3x pairs this week and all have been far too narrow in the foot! I tried Rocketdog, Blowfish and Hush Puppies ones.

The following requirements are required:

1) Size 8 or 9

2) Black, waterproof

3) Minimal fussiness

4) Suitable for wearing in a college, with smart dresses/skirts

5) Not "pull on", needs the side of the boot to open with a zip or buckles or something

6) Low/no heel, grippy sole

7) Wide foot area, decent calf width too (though the calf doesn't have to specifically be aimed at larger legs. My calves aren't huge)

8) Not mega super duper expensive!

The requirements are largely due to my disabled/painful/permanently swollen left foot and ankle plus the need for them to be suitable for work.

I've looked online at Clarks, they've traditionally been good but there's little choice there and the ones available in size 8+ are being reported in reviews as running narrow and they're £150-200!!

They don't need to be mega hard wearing because I don't exactly walk on them much. However I do need to be able to hobble on my crutches around the car and from my wheelchair to desk. I won't be walking much more though.

Any ideas, dear Fabsters?!

Try Yours, they do wider fittings and usually have a good selection and go to at least a 9.

Also try deichman.

Good luck x

Second vote for Yours. Also Simply Be.

What about Next? They do quite a range and offer size 9. Hotter shoes too. I bought some of their sandals and super comfy.

Have you tried Pavers Mrs KC. I have boots as I don't like my feet squished. They're especially good on the sales if you can get them.

With Simply Yours, are they just wider foot bit, or wide calf too? I don't want a draught down my leg, the aim is too be close fitting on my legs so I'm airtight

I shall look at Pavers and Deichmann, I've not tried either yet. I only tried the three brands mentioned in the OP and also looked online at Clarks, so far.

Also, Simply Be have various calf widths, so the normal would be fine I would think.

I have a pair of simply be boots with a normal calf width, would say they're slightly wider than normal but not much. Enough that I can wear them over jeans.

I thought Evans had disappeared when Dorothy Perkins did, to be honest! I'll have a gander....

I hope you find what you're looking for too.

Hi Mrs KC,

You might want to look at thermal riding boots, which probably does everything you want. The trick is finding a pair that is formal enough.

The thought has crossed my mind. My long yard boots are a) brown and b) not suitable style wise for work.

Today, I wore my black classic Dr Martens with Heat Holders socks folded down. With a dress. Trendy Also totally not suitable for many work days.

I think a trip to the Trafford Centre *shudder* might be required. I'm not going to do online shopping for any more boots cos so many of them look decent then you read the reviews (saying they come up small) or you find something nice but no size 8 or 9 or there's no picture that shows the footbed width properly, etc and so many places now charge for returning things.

It wasn't rude! It's the name of a brand of shoes and clothing. I made a silly joke before thanking the person who suggested it. At least, I hope it was taken as me joking (because I was)

I was joking. It was said in a Jimmy Carr quizzical manner (well in my head at least)

I wear various size 9 calf boots from shoezone with a dress quite frequently, they are nice and wide and they do waterproof ones, range from £30 to £60

Reiker... I just bought a black pair, same as the grey ones from last winter. Comfy, fur lined, zips up the side, and good for wider feet.

I got them from Freemans, found a 25% discount code.

I bought boots!! Had to basically remortgage but only two pairs in the entire Trafford Centre fit/were suitable.

I am now the proud owner of calf length black Dr Martens, which I can lace/unlace as much as needed to accommodate my stupid foot. I was hoping not to spend so much though. A few pairs I tried fit my right (ok) foot, but not my left

Just a note about heat holding socks

1st of all not all are genuine

A lot of the socks face masks hats etc that advertise heat holders are pretty rubbish (1st hand information!)

I personally recommend gillet or karrimore brands available from sport’s direct they are designed for walking activities!

2nd once you wash the “heat holder” products they tend to loose their ability’s in heat holding

I think it’s something to do with the micro fibres

And lastly the genuine heat holders don’t only keep your feet warm in the winter they also keep you feet cooler in the summer warmer months !

A field somewhere

To keep your feet warm whether you're wearing leather boots or rubber wellies.

Real sheepskin or alpaca insoles...not the shitty synthetic ones, must be real. 60% or more wool or alpaca socks with either high % cotton or bamboo socks underneath.

I spend hours out in my field up to my neck in mud wearing this set up with rubber unlined wellies and never get cold feet

I have cold feet due to Raynaud's and nerve damage.

And re: the Heat Holders to the person above this comment, the ones I have are definitely genuine. Purchased from the men's section at Sainsbury's in Heat Holders packaging.

They should, hopefully! I was wearing my regular ankle height Docs today and I've had those since I was 14! So 24yrs and counting
