Gout - Do you suffer with it? What do you take to ease the gout flaureups?

I have suffered with gout for a long time. It was initially set off by under cooked cauliflower. In the last year I can get gout it seem by just by looking at foodstuff, my flareups are sever and I've even been admitted to hospital for a week with unbarable pain and was given morphine. My calve muscles are also very hard, rock hard all the time, and I did ask a clinician about this, who said muscle tissue can store uric acid crystals, yet another Saudi its ridiculous.

I suffer from it really badly too, allopurinol daily is the only thing that keeps it under control. I’ve broken my leg dislocated my foot and broken my arm all at the same time and would say gout is way more painful

Allopurinol never worked and I'm currently on 120mg febuxostat. I'm laid up at the moment with my right knee twice its size. I got colchicine yesterday from my gp, but it hasn't kicked in yet.

And Avass, if only to be a pirate...

Colchicine is a god-send, taken as soon as you feel an outbreak building, with naproxen as an anti-inflammatory.

I suffer with it, and for me the allopurinol is the only thing that has worked. I started on 100mg but upped it to 200 because it wasn't working well enough. It can take 6 months to really kick in though, and it increases the risks of a flare initially.

What dose were you on before?

I was on 300mg of allopurinol and it didn't stop flaureups. Febuxostat was the next step and went from 75 to 120mg which is the highest they prescribe for that. I've virtually cut out red meat, which is a shame I could murder a steak. So its mostly chicken and veg meals. Also cut down on white rice. And I drink enough litres if bottled waters. I've finally got a rheumatology appointment next Friday.

Yeah I get it, runs in the family. It can be excruciating. It's the most painful form of arthritis an acute gout attack. Used to be a huge issue for me.

Best anti-inflammatory is etoricoxib but they won't want to put you on it. Best painkiller is codiene.

Not drinking beer made the biggest difference and cutting back on shellfish. I love mussels too . I found drinking lots of water helps but that's purely anecdotal.

Nothing ever worked for me and there are certain tabs I can't take anyway, but this is my little miracle drug, it stops an attack in it's tracks. Just need to be careful what you take

Near Wells

I was advised to take Black Cherry extract for Gout from a nice lady at Holland and Barrett.

It worked, the pain was gone in a few days and I hardly ever suffer any more. If I get a flare up now, 2 or 3 tablets and it's gone by the next day.

I suffered gout from mid 20s. Because of my youth and the active nature of a military career it was always put down to injury. It was only in my 30s and it becoming more frequent and debilitating at times that a doctor looked at it and said gout, totally gout and sent off for a blood test. Previous two NHS doctors had put it down to injury (like military ones) and one even sent me for an MRI scan. The blood tests came back high uric acid levels. So I took the advice and made life choices more sensitive to avoiding gout. Then during the pandemic I got a bad case of it and needed to see the doctor because of work. It was a phone appointment and he simply said he can see my historic blood tests and prescribed me Allopurinol just like that. He said this medication will prevent it. Been taking it if for over 2 years now. No problem at all unless I forget to take then I start to get the tingle again. But then that's my reminder to taken them and it doesn't blow up into full blown gout anymore. I don't miss the excruciating pain of gout or the times its ruined. I only wish it'd been diagnosed years ago and they put me on Allopurinol straight away.

The fittest guy I know suffers with it and tries to tackle it with diet and only that (personal choice I guess). He suffers badly and it really cripples him.

I have heard of stories where a simple bed sheet on a toe can be painful AF

Try and determine what causes the flare ups and obviously avoid or moderate.

For me triggers are

Chocolate

Mushrooms

Steak

Its also a sign that you're dehydrated

Colchicine works for me but be careful of the side effects
