Best time to get car insurance?

I am looking to buy a car. The problem is insurance is compulsory immediately you purchase it, however the quotes these companies demand are crazy.
I am wondering, when is the best time to get car insurance and also how do you drive your car away after buying it, since car insurance is compulsory? |

Most places where you buy the car from will give you a few days "free" insurance so you can drive away.
But it's crap cover so you are best to get your own arranged and have it start on the day you know you're collecting your car. |

Get temporary cover for a few days, there are companies that will cover you for anything between a few hours and a month.
This will give you time to shop around for a permanent policy |

Yeah, this is helpful. I just figured some companies offer a temporary insurance for a few hours. I think I will just get this and to be able to drive it home, then I will take out a policy that starts at a future date, and not drive for a couple of weeks, until the more affordable policy starts. |

I am most likely buying from a private reseller, so they likely won't have a 'free' plan. I have tried getting 'future' quotes from compare the market and confused and the prices keep changing from day to day. and I am wondering if there's a trick to it. I would gladly call these companies to enquire, but I doubt they will tell me the best time to get a more affordable policy for a first timer. |

Insurance protects you and anyone you might be unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident with. It is expensive especially if you've only just passed your test. |

View the car, and if you decide to buy it then you go online (or phone the insurers) right there and then before driving it away. Tell them you want your cover to start immediately.

Remember you have to tax the car before driving it as well.
Again, do it online there and then *before* driving it away. |

As far in advance as you can will make the comparison rates a bit cheaper. Then it's usually worth checking with the company's you want, through calling or web chat, what their best rate is and quote any cheaper you've found. They'll usually be able to give you a better price.

If you are a first time driver you will find all car insurance quotes to be very high. A new driver with no experience on the road is classed as a higher risk for the insurance companies, hence why the premiums are very high to begin with.
All you can do is hunt around but you may not find the quotes drop dramatically.
Even people who have been driving for 20 plus years, some renewal quotes are coming in higher than previous years even without any claims against them now.
The type of car you want as well can also send your premium sky high.
Something basic will be cheaper compared to a more sporty version for a first time driver.
So research really on the car type and insurance is vital.  |

Yeah, thanks. I am getting a basic car, it's just for a little running around. Public transportation in the North East has been horrible with incessant strikes.
I really can't afford anything out of the basics, both for car and insurance, that's why I have converted fabswingers into my special place to get answers to regular questions. I don't know, I get really helpful answers here. Maybe horny people are generally very helpful |

This is a really bad idea as you need constant cover on the car unless you keep it off road and get it SORN.
Just get a quote the day before, there is no good or bad time when it comes to the price  |

I always seem to get the best price a month before the old policy expires.
If it’s just to bring a vehicle home 1 day insurance from cuvva or similar is handy.

Have a look at the Martin Lewis money saving expert site, they have a method you follow that tracks your applications on the comparison sites in a specific order, then prompts you to try minor changes that may help. Think i got my quote down by about 12% |

This.
Get a quote with the 'temporary' policy company for 1 week, and a quote from a 'permanent'/ annual company policy for in 1 week- when the temporary policy ends. (So no gap in cover).
Then get quotes again as above but temp for 2 weeks and the main policy starting in 2 weeks.
Try different combinations (3 wks, 4 wks etc):and add up the 2 policy prices and compare which is the cheapest combination.
Doing it that way can be cheaper than starting one annual policy today.

Temp insurance may be best then.
Some companies often give you it as a sales benefit so check just incase. |

You will also need to tax the vehicle before you drive away too - for which you will need insurance in place - as road tax has not been transferable for years.
If you are caught without tax or insurance, the Police will seize your vehicle |

Its a minefield but you have no choice but to buy the car have it delivered then buy the insurance before you drive it |
