When you have to shorten your workout time.

From the land of haribos.

I was watching sam suleks training video, here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea6b-euOXZ0&t=1s

He said that ideally he want to go at his own pace, rather than to rush it, but this time, he didnt have so much time as he usually have for the lifts, so instead of skipping the workout, he just shortened it down, still the same workout, but by doing less sets.

What do you do if you dont have time to complete the workout and shorten it down? I am like sam in the way as I would shorten my workout by doing less sets but still the same exercise selection

I buy a kebab.

Sometimes I opt for a healthy option, like 6 spicy wings.

I don’t tend to do less sets but will shorten my rest periods. I was in a rush the other day so did a 50 minute workout in 30mins. Wouldn’t recommend

If I’m strapped for time I’ll tend to stick to the same main exercises but shorten rest periods and perform drop sets. It’s amazing what you can get done in half the time.

Stick to compound exercises, low reps heavy weight.

Or if time is that short then do a flexibility session with some abs.

If have to shorten it, I tend to remove some of the accessory exercises so that I can concentrate on any compound lifts.

I prefer shortbread.

Wish this storm exercise would finish its workout.

I believe shortening things is fine. As long as you finish workout.

Workout for me, walk, swim then yoga.

I shorten rest periods, potentially reducing sets on things like arms and shoulders.

If had too I’d take the same approach would rather get all excercises in with less sets that more sets but less excercises. I generally only do 2 sets as it is so could trim a fair bit off without time by just doing 1.

I train at nights though so this never an issue I absolutely detest having to shorten a workout most sessions are sound the 90-100 minute mark

I just get a shifty on if I'm short of time.

Its amazing what you can do if your rest periods are short and you crack through your session.

Yes, you are right there too, by sticking to compound lifts, such as the bench press, squat and the deadlift also saves a lot of time or yes, flexibility sessions too

I remove a couple of accessory lifts and make sure I add them in somewhere else during the week so at the end of the week it is all complete

I would Normally drop the rest period time and add drop sets to increase intensity

Or choose a HIT type workout

I normally train in the morning prior to work

I use supersets for accessory exercises with the same number of reps and sets needed which helps save time

Depends how much time needs chopping off.

If it’s a reasonable amount, I might drop a set on each compound exercise due to the associated longer rest period.

If it’s less time, I’ll hammer through accessory exercises as quickly as is safe.

Reduce rest times in between sets and incorporate “super sets” on isolation exercises

Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote or View forums list

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

I’d say introducing super sets. Be careful with reducing rest time, especially if lifting heavy as you are more likely to injure yourself when tired obviously.

Either way you are working out and not sitting at home doing nothing so you are winning

That is good to remove the accessory lifts and to do them later in the week, so it all adds up like it should be

If I'm short for time I tend to reduce my light reps but keep my heavy reps the same and move faster from one set to the next. I try always to complete my circuit.

Tend to skip some of the warm up sets and get to the heavy top sets quicker
