"I hate them with a passion.
I wonder what clumsy attempt to make people weep John Lewis spews upon the public this year

I really dislike them. A profit making organisation cynically manipulating people's feelings |

A benefit of not being an avid TV watcher is not seeing Christmas Ads until they start being spoken about, leading me to go search for them.
I do quite like what John Lewis does reach year though. Last year's skateboard one was quite thought-provoking. If their intention is to make me shop with them, it doesn't work. Neither do any of the other shops ads... |

Why does it need to be thought provoking?
More's to the point, what is thought provoking about a guy learning to skateboard so he has something in common with his newly adopted daughter?
What has any of this got to do with Christmas?
They're not even trying to sell me anything! it's literally just a waste of everyone's time.
It kills me that a team of highly paid adults sat in a room and conjured up... this.

You seriously don't understand the skateboard advert? |

Man learns to skateboard
Adopted daughter (girl from care home) also skates.
They now have this in common and can bond.
Unless there is something I am missing, I think that sums it up.

I think this is one of those situations where, if you do not understand it before it's explained to you, there's very little chance you'll understand it afterwards either.
However;

It doesn't. I just like that it is.

I'm fairly sure it's obvious that there is more to it than that. |

The skateboarding ad is thought provoking but I think that's a cynical move by John Lewis designed to persuade us to believe their motive is philanthropic. Their main motive is to persuade people to shop with them and to give a good impression of their business which isn't wrong they have responsibility for a lot of employees and I shareholders.
If the end result is that more people decide to foster that's a good thing though, surely. I'd be interested to know if that was the case. |
