Good luck, and I get what you mean. Horror films can be unintentionally hilarious - 'The Grudge' is funny too if you want to see another one, I laughed a lot but not sure the people I was watching it with appreciated that! |

The new one?
I didn’t enjoy it when I went to see it the other week. I feel like they could have added so much more into the film to make it a lot better. |

Most people would say the atmosphere, taught direction, focused script, famously creepy soundtrack, cast performances and eventually the suspense and sense of palpable evil.
What kind of thing scares you though? It doesn't have many jump scares, it's all in the build up and sense of overpowering evil and despair here.

To me that atmosphere is completely punctured the moment the child walks into the dinner party and pisses all over the floor. I just start laughing at that point, and when she she starts shouting 'Fuck me! Fuck me!' I'm afraid I lose it. It's so desperate to shock that it becomes comical - especially when she starts stabbing herself between the legs with the crucifix, or fires out projectile green vomit. I mean, it's not exactly subtle is it?
I think it probably helps if you have religious faith of some kind because it's tying into the things that you believe are possible or the blasphemy might be shocking rather than funny. But as I don't believe in the Devil it's pretty difficult to be scared by him. |

Basically it needed skilful direction, and it had it - William Friedkin was an excellent director. It is why the film is so critically lauded, and not many horror films are over all. It's often called the best ever made.
These original films were aped and parodied by dozens of lesser films too, so don't forget who shocking they were in their day.
You don't have to believe in the devil to be scared by the concept of pure evil too.

i think the internet has numbed us from what you’d deem to be shocking, when the exorcist first came out back in the 70s, it shocked a generation, nothing like that had been seen before, fast forward to the late 90s and early 00s, and the internet quickly got filled with much worse content than that.
Have a think, when was you last truly frightened of a movie? |
