I found myself saying "despair squids" to my kids tonight and doing squid actions. It's from Red Dwarf. I think they despaired.

Probably one of the most popular shows in Scotland. Really funny and it's on Netflix.

In response to your Red Dwarf line I worked with someone who would occasionally say "Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast" to me whenever he was going home.

Regularly quote movies.

I went for a walk on my lunch last week and went into a field that I've done many times before to sit under a tree and eat and watch the world go by. As I was walking towards the tree a guy beeped his van from the road, stopped and shouted "there's no path up there" and I shouted back "it's OK, I'm a limo driver"(dumb and dumber). He then followed up with "what? Are you trying to get to the top road?" and I hit him with "roads, we don't need roads where we're going"(back to the future).

I ended up leaving again because he started to get annoyed, but I chuckled to myself afterwards

To be fair I think a lot of stuff goes over my head! My ex quoted non-stop from Star Wars "these are not the droids you're looking for" and it drove me crazy. But I can see it's a shorthand for shared pleasure in a way - people quoting lines and others recognising them.

"I found myself saying "despair squids" to my kids tonight and doing squid actions. It's from Red Dwarf. I think they despaired.

What are your favourites?

"

When with my Ozzy friends any line from Chopper or The Castle.

London friends, it's Lines from Snatch

Kiwi friends it's Lines from Boy

At least 35% of my vocabulary is quoted from movies

South Africans friends get lines from Lethal Weapon 2

I do it waaaay too much

Having the kids use Game of Thrones quotes from hearing them so much was a bit of an oops. (Obviously they've not seen it)

But usually it is just quotes from 80s movies.

If anyone, including me, says "damn it!" I have to say "Janet" (Rocky horror picture show)

If I hear or say "Two weeks" I have to repeat it weirdly and hold on to my head (Total Recall)

There is a South Park quote for almost any situation

Used to use loads of movie quotes with my kids, it’s definitely a Dad thing. When they got older and they played the game too it got very competitive.

“What’s in the box?”

“Hey!, I’m walking here!”

“Do or do not, there is no try”

“Great kid, don’t get cocky”

“Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man."

“Well, that escalated quickly."

"I have a bad feeling about this."

“I'll Be Back."
