Foreign Snakes Survive in the Wild in UK

Chelmsford

Reports that an escaped cornsnake which is actually not a native snake in the UK escaped from a Scottish home and survived a whole winter in the wild. Now Scotland is one of the most northern countries in the UK and by definition much colder than Brighton which is down south. If this bugger can survive a whole winter then what other reptiles are out there . Worrying..

What's going on here? It's all over the news

A corn snake it one of the most docile breeds of snake Tom. Also they tend to be bright orange so I'm sure yhey would be easily spotted by birds of prey.

Get back to us if the find an Anaconda in Andover or a Boa constrictor in Bath.

Snakes often survive sub zero winters in other parts of the world, they take refuge underground in caves etc, where the temperature remaiins pretty constant.

Had a few corn snakes, pythons and constrictors years ago, one 5ft corn snake escaped and found him well over a year later on the doorstep . He had been in sewers I think as had a few marks from having to eat rats that fought back which I figured when he shat himself and tried to hide 1st time went to feed him on his return. Loved in london and snowed that winter I’m sure. Didn’t know was press worthy tbh as pretty sure happens every city regularly but not the sort of thing u mention to ur neighbours

Sadly, too many species - typically enabled by people - are expanding their range, often causing devastation
