Actually as a fat burning exercise swimming is not one of the best due to the body being submerged in water supporting bodyweight, the effort required to propel one through the water is far less than say running on land for example.

However the health benefits are fantastic for the same reason less impact on joint's and connective tissue.

Not to mention the mental health benefits.

If you want to increase muscle mass through swimming then shortened sessions with sprint intervals.

It wasn't that long ago that swimmer's didn't do gym work but now even a regular swim club will give members gym work to do to support their swim program.

Let's face it some exercise is better than non, and if you feel better and look better for it OP good for you son.

The most important factor in swimming is technique.
