Soul Calibur VI brightens up the dimly lit living room, the glows of the backlit screen casting light on 2 adults sat on a huge sofa, both in their early 40s, one has silver speckled hair and a beard, the other bald and a speckled beard.
Controllers to hand, this is midnight on a Friday/Saturday as they fight it out for a few hours till the early morning.
Random chat, bean-to-cup Cappuccino courtesy of this amateur barista, the occasional voice-over narrating the way the game went... and this game, this wonderful game.
It's the only opportunity I get to do this. But is it still normal, or should I have left this pastime behind 2 decades ago? ![](/icons/s/2/eh.gif) |

Grow up.
Just kidding, nothing wrong with gaming whatever your age! |

Gaming is a great pastime! I know people who game well into their 40's and beyond.

I was an avid gamer in the 90s with the Nintendo… but left it back then. My faves were Legend of Zelda and the Castlevania series.
Any man over 25 who spends all their day/night nowadays would be a real turnoff for me. But that is me- anyone can do anything they like. ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

I game sporadically. I do enjoy it though.
Hell let loose
Civilisation
Badlur's gate
Elite
Some friends are trying to get me to play Hardcore WOW. I may do.
I was always more Tekken and Street fighter than Soul caliber. Give me Law or Guile. Spent half my youth in the arcade: rarely spent more than 20p for the first challenger on SF.

I agree with the majority here. I game. I love the escapism of it all.
It is just another form of media and art. No different to stories, and books, and movies/tv. The majority of people "our age" and older just have not gravitated towards it being as accepted as it is. I've done lots of bonding with friends over gaming. |

I couldn't afford the arcades so sat watching. Definitely a street fighter fan, bought the latest version 6 but again - haven't really had the opportunity to play it.
For me, Tekken unfortunately plays like treacle - but I'm on the latest Tekken 8 beta test and that's up there with Soul Calibur. For me it fixed it all, but my friend who was more avid Tekken wasn't happy at all. |

"I’m just glad to see someone else is still playing Soul Calibur.
Winner stays on, no Mitsurugi allowed. Fight!"
Dude...
I started with SC2 on the Dreamcast. |

Cyberpunk 2077 is my current favourite game to play on the PS5 "
Mine too! I bought Phantom Liberty pre-order when first announced. I never understood why the game was panged so badly. I have it on the PC though, tried using a joypad to play the game but it felt wrong. |

Ty all for validation. Big part of me wonders whether I've grown up.
Truthfully, I only get the opportunity once a week. More truthfully, I'm playing Match Masters on my mobile phone to and from work.
To the 2 non-gamers here, don't you do any casual mobile gaming? |

Gaming only becomes an issue when people can't drag themselves away from it to spend time with their partners/kids or do other family/friends stuff they should be doing and become lost in a gaming world and won't do anything else. |

Shamed to say, that was Zelda Breath of the Wild, and Cyberpunk 2077. It's never happened before, or since.

Nope nothing wrong with it. I'm part of a group on the face place whose members range from their 20s to as old as 70 and we're all gamers. Bear in mind the group currently numbers nearly 90,000 men. |

And you are in the right location with Edinburgh being home to Rockstar and Build a Rocket Boy "

I'm 37, been gaming since I was a kid, and I don't plan on ever stopping. It's good escapism, and there are wonderful stories out there in games I'd hate to have missed.
Always struck me as daft that some folk who downcry gaming will happily sit in front of the TV for just as long as I'm at my PC. At least with a game you're interacting, giving your mind a wee workout. |

I use flight simulation as a means to keep my mind active and sharp. Requires memory, reflexes, math’ problem solving, and teamwork.
The perfect hobby for someone my age, 47. |

I'm way into HLL at the moment. I like strategic elements in games. And that's got so much strategy involved. You can see people who've come to it from other shooters. They've no sense of were the batte lines are and just charge in like Rambo. It's funny. It also means there's lots of mic communication and you get to know people. American servers are hilarious, low toxicity, bags of humour, hacking is rare.
Love blowing Panzers up with satchel charges. ![](/icons/s/twisted.gif) |

My boy works in London now for Sharkmob, developer of Bloodhunt Vampire Masquerade.

I've had plenty of friends who were gamedevs from my earlier years as a CyberGoth lol - but we're talking the era of Argonaut, Psygnosis, Gremlin ... Latest would've been SCEE
Always thought I should join the ranks, ended up lecturing at university instead ![](/icons/s/2/halo.gif) |
