There are so many films that are set "in the big house" from the incredibly well known ones
to the obscure and artsy.
Tell us about one that you've watched and enjoyed.

I'm going for "Ghosts of the civil dead" released in 1988 its the story of how the govenment and the owners of privately run maximum security prison in Australia slowly brutalise the inmates and guards to provoke a riot in order to build a new, more secure prison. Told partly from the perspective of a new inmate its very gritty.
Partly written and scored by Nick cave too |

"If you’ve never seen Salo - don’t it’s an arty prison-y film from the 70s. Was banned, not sure if still is "
Yes I've seen it. It's grim. Based on 120 days of sodom by De Sade and set in fascist Italy. |

I'm putting that in my One Note. Loved The Proposition (although less said about 20,000 days the better..!).
Cheers! |

'glad this thread has appeared as perhaps you Fabbers will help me remember a film.
Starred the same chap who starred in Magnum PI, he gets stitched up and convicted, has a terrible time bullied so badly he ends up stabbing the prison Boss. In the end he earns the respect of the inmates who help Jim get revenge on the people who put him in prison.
Does that little dit jog anyone's memory about the title and rest of the plot?....

"Shawshank and green mile. I like all the series’ too. Wentworth, Prison Break, OITNB"
I did like prison break. I got story line and some great characters but man, was it slow. I gave up in the end |

"no escape.
ray liotta film where prisoners are placed on an island and made to fight it out.
not a bad idea tbh."
It's set in the future isn't it? Didn't see it but had a big Ray liotta thing ever since Goodfellas |

Even more harrowing when you consider that it's based on true events (not sure how much 'Hollywood creativity' was added for entertainment purposes!) |

Sad how people abuse their position of power to exploit the vulnerable. |

I had a 70s B-movie soft porn on VHS when I was about 15 called Hell Prison. That was quite good.
I’m also working my way through a documentary series about the world’s toughest prisons |

Salo is just nonsense. I mean 120 Days of Sodom is too. I watched it for a uni module. Definitely not something I'd sit through again!! |

I know what you mean though, it is tough going and appears disjointed first watch |

"No film compares to the real experience of prison.. Good Times happy memories "
I was going to do a "who's done time" thread but I doubt many would admit to it. |

Unfortunately I have, open about my life and the decisions I've made, that led me to places such as jail... |

"Scum, one of my favourite films"
I saw it for the first time recently. Excellent film, with a very young ray winstone. A lot more plausible and realistic than a lot of prison films … very stripped down. |

" I hate this film with a passion. So depressing. It was originally shown as play on the bbc. My school deemed it reasonable to show us the play for some obscure reason. To frighten young people into toeing the line more than likely |
