Recommend a red wine

Everyones pallets are different but there are is some rubbish on sale.
I came across an Aldi special and was pleasantly surprised. The Pinot Noir Vignobles Rouessellt is worth a try at £4.35.
Any other recommendations?

If on a budget I d recommend whatever Tesco has at half price and still is around £5 or 6 ...(normal price around £11 or 12) it is not top top end but very palatable - I avoid French (not because they do nt have good wines but to get a decent French in UK you have to spend a lot more unfortunately) and I tend to go for South African or New World red wine. |

I would never buy any bottle marked as half price from either Tesco or Sainsbury's. If they had a decent wine worth £10-£12 they'd sell it for that as they do with Du Pape, which is my preferred red wine. If I can get a 2008 I don't mind paying a little more for it. I don't normally drink white wine but I do like a white Rioja especially if we're having chicken for dinner, or tapas. They work well together.
If I just want a reasonable red wine I'll go for Echo Falls or Blossom Hills (£4 a pop or they're usually on offer 3 for £10, which is more like it). |

It's not that the so-called half price wines are disappointing, they're pretty decent wines, but they are £6-£7 wines, not £10-£12 wines as the supermarkets would have you believe if they're being sold as 'half price'. Do you see what I'm saying? |

Being in the Licensing trade, may I offer the following info?
To get a good French wine, you have to spend more. French wines have tended to suffer over the past 10 years or so as the Australian, NZ, and other emerging wine making countries have captured the market. In fact some of the major French wine companies are buying in the expertise of the Aussies or in one or two instances, have merged with or been bought out by Australian companies to attempt to capitalise on their success.
It is well known that the major supermarkets buy in bulk so they keep prices down; that doesn't necessarily mean quality.
But the wine buyers for Aldi, Waitrose and the Co-Op have very good reputations and sell some fantastic wines at superb prices. Even Off Licence chains such as Oddbins sell very good wines at very reasonable prices. |

For a fiver try an Argentinian Malbec.
Tenner plus for my fav, French Haut Medoc.
I do prefer new world wine, but hate Californian, always taste too sweet and lacks body |

To those who have said that Red Wine is EVIL, can I suggest the following tips?
I'd approached a Sommelier colleague of mine a few years ago after suffering a Heart Attack and both my specialist and GP had recommended I should start drinking a glass or two of Red wine per week for medicinal purposes.
My colleague agreed that some Red Wines can be unpalatable, but to bring them all "into line" with each other and make them more appealing, place the bottle in the fridge at least 2-3 hours before you need to drink it.
Then just as it has been opened, add a few drops of Vimto Squash.
Now, this will no doubt have the wine "snobs" reaching for the nearest sick bag, but seemingly, it does work! Friends have tried it and were pleasantly surprised.
Me? As a lifelong teetotaller, I never had the balls to try it, but my heart condition cleared up and is now very healthy indeed |

Noticed someone mentioning du pape, I did a blind wine tasting a coupla years ago and I marked the expensive Chateau Neuf du Pape as "yucky" (my technical term lol) my personal preference is a Rioja - can't remember off hand what my fave is as recently been more of a dry white girl |

Were they in a black bottle with a really simple label? We got given 6 bottles of pinot noir from aldi...there had been a write up on them probably in the daily mail saying how good they were and they were! All gone now though so can't remember the name x |

Yep I agree Aldi Toro Loco is great for cheap everyday drinking.
For something a bit meatier South American brands Errazuriz and Casillero del Diablo are pretty reliable.
Chateau Musar or Hochar Pere et Fils from Lebanon if you want to try something a bit different (can be hard to source though - try Majestic) |

I love red wine. Agree about Aldi Toro Loco,I would recommend Rhone or Languedoc wine,normally Grenache/Syrah grape.Half price supermarket wine normally a con,but any reduction on Tescos Finest worth looking at,as starting price is normally right. |
