I heard (maybe it's an urban legend) that if you soak apple seeds in water you can make cyanide.

If you watch/Listen to news reports there was something about a landfill in the West Midlands recently that if what was suspected went there, nothing will grow for a million years (give or take).

What was suspected? Presumably not pips?

Well, I'm not 100% sure, I never actually watched/heard the report, I just heard about it. That being said, i dont think pips was an issue.

This is my confused face

So you don't know what was suspected and would stop things growing for a million years? Your comment appeared very specific.

Central

Fully ripened, fertile seeds will germinate, given the right conditions. They'd need moisture and the right warmth primarily. Most citrus plants are grafted onto stronger root stock, as they'll mostly grow insubstantial roots, that won't support strong fruit crops.

Citrus aren't particularly frost tolerant, so if they germinated and grew, they'd probably die in the first winter in the UK. That would be if they managed to get nutritients whilst growing.

If they were in a different climate, they may live longer. But most waste sites will be toxic dumoing sites.

Other seeds from hardier plants could grow but it's far removed from an ideal growing medium.

Yes can grow your own seeds, from fruit eaten though

It could be hydrogen sulphide from a landfill.

It could be myriad reports of flytipping.

Or do you mean the suggestion that waste put into landfill by Monsanto in the 80/90s is contaminating a water course?

There's lots of hits for toxic waste issues in the West Midlands, it would appear. Funny that.

I see lots of apple trees on the sides of the road where folk have lobbed fruit out of the window.

Yet if you want to grow an apple tree from seed it’s a right faff that involves a fridge!

Not 100% sure, but it all began due to local town complaining about the smell being too much or something if memory serves.
