A subject of privacy

Someone just brought a topic up mid thread - its a bit interesting so here goes.

There are search engines, specific websites that allow you to load info/pictures on whoever you may want and find if they have been used previously

You can put a face picture in of someone - and come out with their activity/if and where it was used previous. To me this is a little distrubing.

Someone mentioned them being used to check plagerism, though privacy can obviously be impacted.

The amount of misinformation and or judgements that could be passed on the whim of 'localised activity' of a picture is just scary to me.

Imagine your potential boss doing it for example..

I personally think if they are public, it is fine.

if they are private and someone has granted you permission to _iew, it is rude to check them.

but hey, that's just my take on it.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

The internet is a risk. I know people have found things out with just minimal information.

You can select to make your profile unsearchable. I don't use any images on here of me that I know have been published elsewhere.

I'm open about what I do but that doesn't mean I want to be found.

how about photobucket/flicker ... loads of pictures are loaded up and because people dont think to chage the settings - you could be linked to a whole heap of things not directly associated to you?

That happens. I don't have facebook or twitter or much other stuff but I am on other peoples. I google myself a couple of times a year just to see what comes up and whether I need to take any action. It's part of the danger of the net.

If you truly want to keep anything private then you just don't post it on line. If you do put up information or pictures into a public domain always expect the worst.

you can just do it with google reverse image search. lets u find out if anyone else is using your pics, or if people u r talking to are using others pics.

but yes, there is a lot that people can find out about u online if you are not careful. privacy is one of my main concerns when using this site. wont compromise my privacy principles just cause it might improve my chances of another meet

If the reverse image thingy tells you who someone is what's to say that person hasn't posted their image here?

i agree, and in fact when i searched with my pics it showed other places id posted them. and im sure some other people on here are will post pics on other sites.

however, if the pic is of an american pornstar for exmaple, and on their profile they represent themselves as someone completely different, it could suggest they are fake. Not that iv ever checked anything like that though. only ever checked to see if my own pics have been posted elsewhere. Thankfully only one has been.

The notion of privacy on the internet is a myth.
