Seasonal affective disorder.

Does this affect anyone here?

Not sure if I suffer from it but most of my hobbies and self care activities are outdoor ( E.g) golf abd see impacted by the bad weather leaving me more time at a “ loose end” and with time to think and reflect which is not always a good thing for me.

Anyone else just naturally a bit flatter during the winter months? What do you do to get out of it?

I think it's pretty common. I saw a doctor about some symptoms last year, and they advised that most people should be taking vitamin D supplements due to lower sun exposure, and that it has a big impact on mood.

Aye, likewise, but it doesn’t usually hit me until January when all the razzle dazzle and lights and build up of Christmas is over and done with.

I dislike January with a passion, always feel low. The weather often means it’s more difficult to get out and about and enjoy some fresh air and exercise too.

Will check back on here to see if anyone has any great suggestions as to how overcome that seasonal slump!

I can be. I used to go and get some winter Sun that made a difference.

I'd hibernate given the chance.

Genuine question: how does that work? You prefer the dark days and hide from the bright days?

I genuinely struggle with feeling down in the summer. Bright blue skies, warm summer days, I hate it.

My mood definitely improves once the darker colder days come in.

I suffer . I am a humbug at C... too. I ensure I go away a couple of times over the winter to avoid being at home to long.

Weirdly one positive that came out of covid is that I work from home a fair amount which takes away the old scenario where I would travel to work in the dark and home in the dark with the only daylight seen through the office window. When working at home I make sure I get out for a walk each day

They say one of those S.A.D lamps can help but I don't know. You could have one on whilst working at your desk at home perhaps?

I similarly start feeling more depressed as the days get shorter. I invested in a SAD lamp back when they were stupidly expensive and it’s been worth every penny!

I also try to at least get out for a walk on dryish days.

The cold, dark wet days get me down. I like seeing the sun just not being out in the burning heat. Sunny Autumn days are my favourite with the wind blowing the orangey leaves around. Looking forward to a few of those over the next few weeks before the doom sets in.

Yeah no clue if I have it, but i take vitamin D in the winter, try to get to the gym more cause Ill probs be outdoors for walks less come the really cold weather. But I usually pretty much hibernate winter time. Much prefer spring/autumn, summers okay too though.

SAD can be had at any season of course, a lot of people love the Autumn, the kids back in school and they look forward to Christmas and the New Year etc. They may have birthdays and anniversaries at this time or holiday at this time and just love season's particular type of weather.

The key to SAD is getting it the same time every year.

I don't suffer from it myself.

I do think our gaudy winter solstice happened to cheer people up though. And of course the clever Romans made sure it became Christmas because they never did know when Christ was actually born! pt

I agree I feel like it’s getting worse for me each year. I can handle it till Xmas because the lights help cheer me up but Jan - March is a bad bad time. I take loads of Vit D and use a SAD lamp. Highly recommend! This year I want to do a sun break in Jan too as I struggled so bad last 2 years

Good quality vitamin D and sex apparently helps but if you can’t get sex then just the supplements, I purposely exercise more in winter to try and jolly myself along, it’s cold and dark no one out so no one sees you jogging

Completely agree! Beem taking Vit D supplements for years now and never suffer any SAD symptoms any more. No more aching bones in the winter and my immune system is top notch too ????

Currently taking 4000iu per day which costs about £10 per year from Amazon. Vit K2 is recommended alongside to sequester the Calcium correctly but DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH as I am not a doctor.

'Seasonal' is a misnomer. For me it's more about bright sunny days, I don't care about the season. if it's going to be dank and dull, give me a storm to entertain me, just not endless, boring greyness.

I’m the same as Carrie to a considerable extent. I hate hot weather and the hazy, uninteresting skies/light that comes with it.

I also enjoy the short days. I dunno if it qualifies as SAD, but I’ve been like that as long as I can remember.
