I think his celebrity has kind of overshadowed how a good a footballer he was. Great engine, insane crosser of a ball, amazing passer, got up and down the pitch and really came up good in clutch moments.
There was a hint of him being in the right place at the right time but it's testament to his acumen as well to get the most out of himself. |

I mean I wasn't paying close attention but I'm pretty sure he was a successful footballer before they formed their supercouple. Also not a football expert but don't think pretty boys can coast on their looks on the field |

I'm not a football fan but I have a feeling it was both.
There will be great footballers everywhere, some that won't have had the backing of ManU at its peak and prime, the training and encouragement and resources to get better, he was certainly going to improve and get better compared to others. But to say he was just any other footballer would be disrespectful to his skill - the success wouldn't have come without it. |

I think this is what I was trying to elude to in my post. You just said much better. |

I think he was part of the revolution in change from the day's of footballers getting pissed with fans after the game in the supporters bar to the clean, healthy taking nutrition alot more seriously.
Also I think he made difficult stuff look simple like pin point accurate passing.
But I think the game has progressed significantly since his peak, man u and arsenal where ahead of the rest with fitness and nutrition.
Everybody else has caught up.
Today's player's are athlete's rather than football players.
But I'm sure if he where around today he would adapt and fit in, not sure he'd be subject to the same amount of press and media attention.

Love this answer. He certainly faced a lot of adversity. Pretty doesn’t cut it in football long term. |
