Unless he had been really close, and there had been some artificial lighting, he probably couldn't really get much detail on his phone, I'd have thought. Even with artificial lights, if he was more than just a few feet away, it would probably show very little, if anything.
You must have got close to him to be able to make out that he was using an iphone, not a Samsung etc, so surprised you didn't ask him to show you the film??
