The largest part of our water bill is for the treatment of our waste water.

They are not treating my waste, just dumping it in a river.

What are the moral and or legal grounds for withholding this part of my bill until they begin to treat my waste water?

Anyone else think this idea has legs?

Thanks

P

Whilst I fully understand your frustration at the situation, they are taking your sewage, if they weren’t taking it you would have to pay for a septic system (if you can gain permission) that would be costing you and there would be the cost of someone emptying it periodically.

In summary, they are providing a service to dispose of your sewage and can charge you for that.

It makes me so mad that we can't swim in the sea down here. I think legally you have to pay your bill or consequences will follow. Morally? That's really down to you.

Don’t pay, and keep all your sewage in your garden to be dealt with yourself?

Manchester's water supplier, United Utilities, did very well in the Ofwat report as they were the second best performing in England and Wales behind Severn Trent Water. As a result, United Utilities will now be allowed to charge an additional £24 million in customer

It would take a protest on a mass scale to effect change.

You'll end up paying more in the end if you try to tackle it individually.

Rights are worthless without the means to act upon them.

I think I have seen a class action against a water company for the closure of a community leisure resource (beach)

The water company had to clean up at their expense.

I paddle board but have not done it for two years now to the complete mess they have made of the local river

Looking closer at my bill, about 20% is classed as Usage. Collecting, cleaning and returning to the environment.

The first and last are infrastructure they got for peanuts and haven’t invested in.

The post is here because without algorithms we get broader opinion than on Facebook.

Mass non-payment of bills is something worth thinking about.

We now automatically check the Surfers against sewage App as well as a weather and tide times app before going for a sea swim.

Morally you can withhold payment as a form of protest to help bring about change. You may face sone consequences., unlikely for a water bill. Is it a good type protest? Probably not. Better to post address of those major shareholders on Facebook with the caption ‘Know your Enemy’ and RATM track playing , that will make them take more notice of you

Legally you don’t have to pay anyone anything, there is a process called county court where they have to prove what you owe them, you can string it right out for a few years interest free till the day before & make some silly offer without getting CCJ’d

Better if they held the CEO's criminally liable than the paltry fines issued to the company - then you'd see change

I wrote to our MP a year or two ago about the shit in the rivers. He replied with a copy and pasted load of bollocks from the Tory party.

I'd like to think this could be one of the main issues at the next election, except I haven't heard anything remotely convincing from Labour as to what they'd do about it.

The bastards put me on a meter over a year ago and soon realised that the metered amount would be fraction of what they have been ripping me off for years.

Now they are coming up with all sorts of excuses not to start using the meter readings and treat me fairly.

I've always played fair and not wasted water on lawn sprinkling and hardly ever wash cars.

Time the privatisation racket was reversed. Thanks a million Mrs T.or whoever conned Britain into the state which ensued.

Not far

"Better if they held the CEO's criminally liable than the paltry fines issued to the company - then you'd see change "

I think this is the only way to see change. If we as individuals could be prosecuted pouring effluent into a river then it only seems sensible for CEOs to be prosecuted for permitting their company to do the same.

I have a septic tank, my water bill has dropped by about £350 per year from when I was on mains sewerage. If I capsule tap in to the local spring down the road, I’d happily fuck them off completely

Bullshit

The state owned utilities were providing a service, these people are just stealing your money

Unless, like me, you refuse to pay
