Never tried it until I met Kate, and because of her Polish/Continental heritage a whole new world opened up to me that I've been enjoying for the past 32yrs.

Kate buys it every time she does our main food shop

That is yummy. The Food Programme on R4 is discussing garlic, it's ancient history and how it's produced now.

lol, my Dad never trusted anyone but my Mom as far as food went, so never tasted Kate's culinary skills. My Mom loved it once she plucked up the courage to try "foreign food" after my Dad died.

They are discussing the anti-bacterial and health benefits. I'm not sure that chewing a raw clove is quite for me but it's the best way to get the health benefits.

It was clip of a vox pop from 1971 and the fear expressed by most Brits at joining the EU that they wouldn't want their food here and have everything covered in garlic.

Lidl sell a type of garlic called one clove . It's walnut sized and round. Just peel the outer and you have one large Clove of garlic.

If you want to reduce the bitterness of any garlic then cut it in half and remove the centre stalk section. Blanche in boiling water and then plunge into cold water. Do this about 3 times and then use as normal. The garlic will still have the flavour but will be sweeter.

Yes, it's ancient but was not really used in food in this country.

Here's a tip for you all ... Go to the deli at Sainsbury's and ask for a ring of Whyeska, (it's spelt different but it's pronounced that way)

It's a Polish lean pork garlic sausage and it's absolutely gorgeous and very very moreish. It comes in rings or half rings like black pudding. You can eat it as it comes or you can boil it and eat it with fresh buttered bread and boiled eggs, or add it to cheddar cheese sarnies.

It's around £5 for a small ring but once you've tried it you'll be hooked.

or pike, lol, Kate's got an old Polish cookbook that's translated into English and there's loads of stuff in it that we see as being traditional English food like cheese, onion and potato pie, with the garlic added or with various types of sausage added to it.

I'm not keen on river or lake fish as it's too "muddy" tasting for me, but may be that's why you are supposed to lace it with garlic during cooking?

Fabulous ingredient, and wild garlic has been in the UK long before the imported one. I love using it although would stay well clear for at least a day before meeting people in the scene. Also I would not load my food with garlic when I have to face people at work the next day... it is vile to smell garlic breath when you have not had any yourself.
