Dubai & Nottingham |
I just had a weird conversation with my team, they met this vendor recently and I said I know him. I’m only here living in Dubai and being your boss because of him.. about nine years ago, he was asked to go to Africa , he refused and I was second choice.
So began a completely new chapter and path that lead me to here ……. Purely because he said no.
Does stuff like that freak you out a little ?

I’ve been very fortunate to date, I have a good job which I love, a wonderful ex wife and fantastic daughter, I’m relatively healthy and sane.
I consider myself very fortunate OP |

If my grandads pit didn’t close and force him to move half way across the country to work on the pit at the back of the estate I grew up on, I’d be a different person with a different father.
Yes I often think of the random occurrences that forge who you are and if it had gone the other way, what might have been.

You know a little of my back story as to how I came to do the job I do now
Two very personal tragedies brought me into contact and the lives of the people I now work for and we are achieving absolutely amazing things …
I do believe fate can play a little part in the path our lives take |

A lot of hard work and determination got us to where we are today. Building up our own business from scratch all by ourselves and running it daily. We are proud of ourselves how successful we are and will hopefully reap the rewards at retirement time. |

Things like that don't freak me out exactly but I do look back on the coincidences that have lead me to where we are.
For instance if we hadn't paid extortionate amounts of PPI for loans we could barely afford which we subsequently were compensated for, we wouldn't have been able to live without working before retirement age. |

My retirement plan is based on being lied to about diesel emissions for 20 years…. |

"Is that you CJ?
(Only really old people will get that reference ) "
"I didn't get where I am today by selling ice cream tasting of bookends, pumice stone and West Germany."
Old person here I think. |

I was late getting here due to a badger eating a junction box at East Malden |

I’m back almost doing what I first did when I left college- partly due to covid. I possibly have one of the most WTAF CV’s of anyone you’ll meet, partly due to getting bored with doing the same thing, partly due to also needing money to pay for fun stuff and partly due to a bit of a ‘why the hell not’ attitude and being able to pick up most technical based things. Give it a few years and I’ll probably be doing something totally different again |

This is how I see it: You can’t control where opportunities come from. You *can* control whether you grab them when they come along.
So no, the circumstantial stuff doesn’t freak me out. |

I think we all need a little luck to go our way but try our best to make the most of the luck we've been given. It's not lost on me that I've pretty much fluked my entire career whether it's promotions based on someone else leaving or significant pay rises just because I was at the company at the right time.
I do also feel almost guilty because what I get paid to do pales in comparison to what my parents had to do or what teachers or nurses do on a daily basis. Don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna give up what I do, but that stuff definitely freaks me out a little. |
