Loved my old Chevy that I could park anywhere without concerns of door knocks etc/load with sacks of cement/concrete slabs/grow bags…it was super reliable.
Children urged me to upgrade and I now have Volvo. I still use it as a van though |

I'm a fan of German cars. I've had a few Golf & 3 series diesels, all reliable. My first 3 series had 285,000 miles when I sold it...the engine was fine, but the bodywork was starting to go. I've also had a Skoda Fabia, it was reliable, but the build quality wasn't quite as good as VW or BMW.
I'd never touch a Ford, Fiat, Vauxhall or Renault again. |

I had a turbo blow completely on my Giulietta. And twice the inside door handle snapped clean off. Oh, and I snapped a suspension spring at the rear.

Shame I haven't had the same experience with Toyotas.
Cheap and tacky plastic interiors, the last one I drove (I'd inherited) didn't appear very well put together - the connectors literally fell out of the back of the sat nav unit.
Other than my yank, all my cars have been Fords - but then, when I started driving it made sense as my dad worked for them, so I could get a discount on parts.
Never had any real problems and nothing I couldn't fix |

"I'd never touch a Ford, Fiat, Vauxhall or Renault again. "
Definitely avoid French or Italian.
But all cars throw bills. Just get one you like and it won’t upset you quite so much.
I find Japanese ones more reliable, but they are more prone to rust with age, and parts can be expensive. Mine has decided it needs new brakes this year, which has stung a bit. |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
"MR2 roadster. With a beautiful quad-pipe exhaust that sounds just divine. "
Great cars, always trying to kill you. The hood drains block and flood the interior, and the subrames rot causing the engine to fall out if the piston rings don’t fail first causing oval bores and eventual failure through oil starvation.
Loved mine. Only needed a lambda sensor (£50) in all the years I owned it. Oh, and a new hood. |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
"Great cars, always trying to kill you."
I also have a TVR. The MR2 is a pussycat, believe me. |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
Yeah but you can’t have a TVR as a daily driver, really.
If I think of my MR2 I think of it pulling me into the truck ruts on the motorway, following cambers in the snow, etc etc |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
That’s just what a small, lightweight sports car will do though. It’s hardly a surprise. If anything the MR2 is exceptionally predictable and reliable for its type/class. |

It’s a bugger to drift, though. |

Have a 2012 astra 1.7 cdti, had from new and now done just shy of 160k, runs and drives perfectly. Only issue I had was a knackered battery and a replaced egr valve. Have all the usual items replaced which happens on any vehicle like pads and discs etc but there serviceable under wear and tear. I certainly won't sell it anytime soon as its cheap to run. |

Had Toyota's (reliable but boring, except the mr2's) Honda (fn2 type r, but never put a foot wrong in 50k), fabia vRS, only issue it had was injector clog twice in 40k. 330d nearly 300k when got rid, two other bmw's since, with no fault on the car.
But nowadays think pretty much anything from a few years will be reliable as long as you look after it wrll |

A Vauxhall insignia 12 plate 20 tdi
Never missed a beat. 312000 miles on when swapped in May.
50ish mpg all day
Only two major break downs….
A new clutch at 262 k
And a split turbo pipe (which was rather fiddly but didn’t cost the earth)
Servicing cost very reasonable.
Was heavy on breaks. New set ever year (but when your doing 30+k a year it’s no surprise)
Couldn’t find another in price range with decent mileage or I would have had another in an instant.
Seat leon 1.6 Tdi now (clutch went at 140k disappointing but not uncommon) the Mpg is over 60 unless tanking it. |

"A Vauxhall insignia 12 plate 20 tdi
Never missed a beat. 312000 miles on when swapped in May.
50ish mpg all day
Only two major break downs….
A new clutch at 262 k
And a split turbo pipe (which was rather fiddly but didn’t cost the earth)
Servicing cost very reasonable.

If you read the thread.. someone post that the Insignia was the worst vehicle and NOT to be touched. |

Lots of people knocking ford on here, I have a 18 plate mundane estate, just over 110 thousand on the clock, great loadspace, 50 to the gallon, hardly ever driven without a lot of weight in the back apart from tyres it's only needed a new battery, one abs sensor and a number plate lamp.
My second mondeo one before Had done 280 thousand, I'd probably still have that if some idiot hadn't rear ended it |

I’ve had a number of VW’s over the years, very reliable and economical just sold a golf SV with 193,000 on it, serviced regularly and timing belts done no major repairs. Bought 2.0Tdi golf estate, more economical than their 1.6Tdi and a lot better drive |

Ok it's a bit tired but it owes me no money and i service it myself
As for other makes id say anything Honda,Kia, Hyundai Mazda are hard to beat in the reliability game.. anything German seems to be made out chocolate at the moment and tend to go wrong just by looking at them.. and then don't get me started how rubbish jaguar/landrover are as a brand |

I wouldn't look past Toyota , economical, reliable, comfortable, great drive , a lot of people want a bit of style & class so maybe Toyota may not offer that as such but totally depends on what you want but more importantly what you can afford..no point in having a car if you're stone broke from running it. |

Actually might be worth mentioning i had a tesla model 3 before this. Only had for 2 years so cant guarantee long term life but it ran absolutely beautiful and the extra technology teslas provide make long journeys very very easy. regular manc to london driver here so all my cars are always purchased with long journeys in mind.
Hope this helps! |

Lexus & Toyota are the best, avoid anything European, and Ford, Renault have got their engines in lots of things now, and they are all terrible. Definitely don't get anything Jaguar Landover unless you want it to live at the garage
Avoid diesel unless you drive a hell of a lot of miles, EGR, DPF, and adblue systems are all crap and have to be fitted to clean up the filthy diesel emissions.
DMF, High pressure pumps, injectors, turbos, they all fail prematurely on modern cars.
Petrol doesn't need any of that generally, and ULEZ compliant from 2006, rather than 2015 for diesel.
Oh and all cars built after about 2008 are only built to last 8 years, 100k max because the manufacturers know that new car buyers would chop it in by that mileage and buy a new one.
Most modern cars are white goods, I repair engines for a living, mainly German diesel's, very rarely Japanese, and my 20 year old Lexus now has 290k |

I had a Mazda 6 for nearly 10 years and apart from new tyres, brake pads and discs, and topping up the oil it had nothing else done to it. It wasn't serviced in all that time, it never failed an MOT and it never failed to start.
Absolute beast of a car!
I now have a Mazda CX-5 which is proving to be equally as durable. |
