I think first it has to be assessed as to why it is viewed as wrong.

The principle most ascribe to is: as long as it is between two consenting adults it's their business?

So then what is left is the risk of genetic problems?

Then we have contraception so that risk can be mitigated substantially.

I wonder how much of the opposition to it is an archaic cultural artefact. It 'feels' wrong to me but identifying why rationally is quite a challenge.

The royal family have a tradition of marrying cousins. Hence the need to introduce 'fresh blood' now and again.

Its not illegal.

Out here in the country side years ago before cars were common place a lot of cousins getting together was quite usual but looking at some of the results its probably best done with precuations taken first.

The Town by The Cross

It isn't illegal, so there's no worry on that front.

Having a relationship with a cousin would depend entirely upon how well you knew them surely ?

A cousin you grew up with and fought with and laughed with and believe is family - I don't think anyone would begin to think of them as sexual.

A cousin you have never met and then do meet and this is your first meeting as adults - then why not ?

I'm not 100% sure but i'm sure enough to mention it that the genetic problems are all but myth - designed to prevent in-cest. I guess a blood test wouldn't hurt.

Are we only talking 1st cousins ? what about 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc who you have no idea of and blood has been diluted for the nth time ........

It's not as rare as you might imagine for cousins to marry

Researching the possible genetic harm, I read that Charles Darwin married his first cousin and had seven children half of which were sterile......

Plus the Hapsburgs had been interbreeding for so long that they died out !

Don't try to tell me that FAB isn't educational.

I thought generic risk was pretty low but I thought I'd check just in case. When you type this into Google the first link is from Bradford.gov.uk (which in itself is interesting, who'd have thought?). They say it's between 3-7%.

In the west.

I don't think it should be allowed. I know it happened in my family a couple of generations ago. The couple had a child but she was born with disabilities and didn't live very long.

This may not have been because of the close relationship but they didn't have anymore children.

Not here to judge. They are probably on the cusp of family proximity but not to closeness I would say is dangerous and hence why not illegal. If they make each other happy more power to them. Let them crack on and everyone else should mind there own business and concentrate on their lives.

Obviously some have raised potential risks in procreation. That is a risk assessment all parents who know of potential genealogy risks have to make before having children. I don't see why cousins should have any lessor rights to family than anyone else known to carry extra risk due to genealogy or know family medical history?
