You know the ones... the irritating neighbour, the arse that runs the shop down the road.. The relative maybe who just has to ruin every function going.. the one who causes trouble at every turn kind of thing.
Do you think they can change?? Mellow out or is it a true case of a leopard never changes its spots?? |

almost everyone has the capacity to change their lives around ...the will and motivation to do so is a different matter and often much harder to find. Until the person sees a benefit to changing their behaviour generally they wont!
there are exceptions, those with real problems which cannot be overcome , but as a rule they arent going to be among the people you're talking about. |

"my ex father in law was always a nasty piece of work, as he got older he just seemed to mellow out and now hes actually quite nice "
All well and good but what about the grief and heartache these types of people cause for years, sometimes decades, until they realise the error of their ways and expect to be forgiven. Fuck them, I say. Everyone knows the difference between right and wrong and those that ignore that don't deserve one iota of forgiveness.
Take Tiger Woods, for example. He knew he was betraying a thoroughly decent woman by all accounts yet that mattered not one jot to him. He didn't stop to think about her or his kids when he was parking the love torpedo in a succession of beauties who thought even less of HIS family - they just wanted to shag the world's richest sportsman.
- And then he gets caught!
"Oh I'm so sorry for my indiscretions."
"I'll never do it again."
"From now on I'll strive to be a better husband and father."
.
.
Well, tough fucking shit mate! You had ya chance and blew it and were only sorry coz you got found out or you'd still be shooting ya load into any unscrupulous tart who wants it to this day.
Forgiveness?
Fuck them! |

Sorry, it was too early to write a serious answer… and it would need to be a long answer. I’ll try for a shorter one:
Yes – some behaviour traits can and do often change.
No - some behaviour traits will not change.
Yes – some people reflect and learn from their mistakes and poor judgement calls.
No – some people already know the consequences of the actions they are about to take and still take them… their remorse is hardly likely to be sincere.
Yes & No – because sometimes it is not the person ‘doing’ who needs to change it is the perception of the onlooker and their mindset of only seeing what supports their belief… so the question there would be can the onlooker pause to take an objective view from another angle.

All very fair... I'd like to think in most cases I see the 'good' in people until thoroughly proven they have none!
Seeing the good does leave you wide open however...

It can leave you wide open sometimes but how awful to go through life not trusting anyone and assuming that at some point you will be proved right
I like wide open |

Perception is probably the key to this as all of us can see bad in some where others only see good and vice versa.
"But mum I love him" is often opposed by "but he's no good for you" but who is to say who's right or wrong.
The toughest walk in life is the tightrope of the middle ground, constantly trying not to put a foot too firmly into one camp in order to maintain the status quo and for an easy life |

There is no assuming - if you look hard enough for something you will find it.... or at least believe you have. This works both ways... whether looking for good or bad.
The trick is not to look... but not to ignore what's under your nose (dangle bogies included) |

Faking it or diplomacy or even cowardice you choose the word but the one thing I do know about life is that keeping the peace is about the hardest fucking task we ever take on |
