The whole industry was squashed in the 80's, Thatcher just found it a vulgar I think. Huge studios were allowed to close down. We did well up to then (and even then thanks to Handmade Films and C4), but afterwards its been slimmer pickings I think. We have no Holywood (or even Ealing any more) for sure.

When you think of the amount of British directors and actors who make it in Hollywood, scriptwriters probably too... in a way a lot of American films are kind of half British too.
And of course there was that time where a lot of the big set-bound epics like Star Wars were filmed in London. Most people wearing a mask in that film were British for sure.

They still are. The big lake over which the X-wings fought the TIEs in The Froce Awakens and surrounding land battle was in Derwent Water and Thirlmere while the film's forest scenes were shot in the Forest of Dean, the big battle scenes in Rogue 1 were largely filmed at RAF Bovingdon and the Imperial base in the same film was in Canary Wharf... Most of the studio filming was UK as well.
Lots of other "American" films are largely shot in the UK - look for filming locations of The Batman for example... |

It's an impressive list, of course these are all outdoor locations though (which we've got much better at promoting), we just knocked down a lot of our Elstree studios where a lot of our huge indoor stuff was filmed unfortunately... and that and reduced funding knocked our industry back for years.

Lockstock soundtrack is fantastic even the monologues. The film is a little dated now. Dead Mens Shoes is also a noteworthy film. Shane Meadows (This is England) I think.
