"Hope this isn't true....
Joburg is the only place I've visited where people sleep with guns under their pillows.... "
I think this is going to be the point, it is common in South Africa and would probably be the same for the USA to keep firearms where we might think "baseball bat" .......
it sounds similar to a case a few years ago where a famous rugby player mistakenly shot his daughter dead thinking it was a burglar |

Hmmm...as that sounds suspicious to me. Two shots, one in the head and you can't tell who you're shooting?!!
Hmmm... |

Depends on the type of gun and how you've be trained to use it. A double tap is a technique that many are taught to use - if one shot just clips them with two you have more chance of incapacitating your assailant. |

"Twice apparently. :-/"
Popped her once in the head and then in the chest, or vice versa. Burglar my foot. (probably shouldn't say that about a legless man) |

If you're trained to shoot I'd have thought you'd be able to assess the situation: it's not as if he's in theatre is it?

I couldn't really give a stuff tbh. This is a guy who moaned about the length of another amputee's blades at the Olympics as the reason he got beat. He sounds like someone with a short fuse. |

She turns up soon after 4am. She would have had to pass the armed security at the gate of the complex he lived in so she would have had the password to get in so in his defence he proberbly didn't have a clue who was there. having spent a long time over in SA I do know everyone over there are paranoid about there security. Just think it's a terrible accident and nothing more. |

I share your sentiments actually, as his strop about the blades was the first thing I thought of. |

The news just showed a photo of her. She's was gorgeous. He shot her as she tried to wake him in bed as a surprise. He must have had his hand on the gun and his finger on the trigger. |

I tend to agree. All stories seem to suggest this too. |

i think the one thing we are potentially missing here..... if the rest of us are startled.. we can jump out of bed and rush down stairs... I know i have done that once or twice...
remember he is not going to be able to do that...
bearing in mind how violent SA is... and the gun happy culture people have in protecting themselves and what they tell tourists who go there.. am i suprised he would have a gun in arms reach...... no

"If it is an accident, you wouldn't be able to live with yourself would you "
which is why in the case of the famous South african rugby player who killed his daughter mistakingly thinking she was a bugular they never charged him with murder....
the guilt of knowing what he had done and having to live with that for the rest of his life was punishment enough.... |

So bearing all that in mind, we are asked to consider a scenario where his gf knows he sleeps with a gun under his pillow in a country where doing so is common because of the fear of personal attack, and yet she STILL decides to surprise him at 4am AFTER a security guard has let her through (which is exactly what security guards are not supposed to do). To my way of thinking, if you lived in a country like that you'd sleep with one eye open and he would have been woken by her entering the house, walking through it, generally making her way to his bedside. He didn't wake. Yet he was alert enough to get that gun and fire it twice at close range and kill her - the instant she tried to wake him.
If I smell a rat it's usually because there's one close by somewhere. |

Whenever I visit South Africa I’m always disturbed by the hugely disproportionate spread of wealth between the “have’s” and the have-nothing’s”
Gun crime is an ever present threat and many of the Afrikaans employ armed guards to protect their property while by the same token offer little by the way of compassion to those members of indigenous society who are trapped by manufactured circumstance and forced to live in abject poverty…
There’s a lot needs to change there, before tragic incidents like this stop happening,,,, but there’s even more needs to change to get at the root of the problems that create them….. |

I feel heartily sorry for all those involved… but I’m not oblivious that many people get shot and killed or die from preventable causes in that region every day and we don’t share the same public outpouring of sympathy or even give it the news coverage…..
One death a tragedy…. Many deaths a statistic….

I hear messages about sympathy for him and nothing is being said about her family and sympathy for them.
I thought there was an issue after the Olympics/Paralympics where they had been seen arguing. That happens. Two shots and one of them a head shot made me do a double-take at the news this morning.
Why can't people shoot at legs for burglars? |

Another country where guns are two a penny and people use them without a second thought , there's no place for guns in a modern society.
Just heard on the JV show 25,000 died there last year OMG! |

A reporter for the South African Mail and Telegraph has said there is a definate step-change in the way it is being reported! The whole tone has changed in the last few hours as more details have emerged. They are even highlighting his temper and the trouble with the police.. This guy is (was?) a God in SA...
Police are going to oppose bail and it looks like thay have the evidence for a charge of murder.
Oh how the mighty are fallen.. |

"Lets see if your making jokes if your wife daughter or son are shot.. bet we wont be allowed to eh?"
Well, as a female, married to my husband who is male, the chances of me having a wife are pretty remote. I also spent 12 years growing up in S.A in a place called Kempton Park, where I learnt how to fire and handle guns for protection. YEP...I am more than qualified to make jokes and have opinions. With all Oscars money and security, it was no accident! |

Qualified to make jokes on someone who was killed innocently? Did you go to college to get that qualification?
Whats next? It was the anniversary of Jamie Bulgers death this week... you want to go for that one too??? |

Lots of jokes go around about current affairs including about people who have died. If you don't like them don't laugh at them but it's a tad egotistical to set yourself up as the thought police and try and dictate what others should or shouldn't find humorous. Get over yourself. |

I am firearms trined and a trainer to. We teach a double tap to "centre mass" thats the biggest target. A shot to the head is either an extremely bad shot or deliberate.
You choose which one !!!!! |
