I detest Morrissey's vocal style, but The Smiths were otherwise a great band musically.

On a similar vein Lou Reed in The Velvet Underground, and Bob Dylan with The Hawks/The Band, or Travelling Wilburys

Would you want Black Francis to be a singer at your wedding? No.

Would anyone (apart from Kim Deal) being the lead singer work? No.

Technically he's appalling, but that whiney (Like Shaggy from Scooby doo) whine just works.

I have to wade in on this. I have the least karaoke friendly voice, everything bar Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam and a few dishonourable mentions elsewhere are beyond my limited and deep vocal range, but I can pull off a passable falsetto for Supermassive Black Hole.

Seconded. Fairytale of New York only worked because he sounded exactly how the character being portrayed in the song would expect to sound (which made it almost a parody of himself). He always sounded like the heavily intoxicated last karaoke participant that was left standing. Which I suppose he was.

They're are some terrible suggestions in this thread

Singers that can't hack it any longer but were pretty decent when they started:

Coverdale

Bon Jovi

Ozzy

James LaBrie

Debby Harry

David Lee Roth (but it never mattered anyway)

Alison Motet

Singers that never had it:

Dave Mustaine

Ian Brown

Ridiculous suggestions in this thread so far:

Eddie Vedder

Noddy Holder

Matt Bellamy (I can't stand Muse, BTW)

Bruce Dickinson

Matt Bellamy has an amazing voice. Its his style you probably don't like (heavy breaths between lines).
