What are some of the most successful bands but with really bad lead singers
Jump to: Newest in thread
I detest Morrissey's vocal style, but The Smiths were otherwise a great band musically.
On a similar vein Lou Reed in The Velvet Underground, and Bob Dylan with The Hawks/The Band, or Travelling Wilburys

Wtf am I reading?
Oasis
Muse
Iron Maiden
SERIOUSLY???? These are your go-to bands with bad lead singers?
I'd suggest there aren't that many very good bands out there with poor singers if I'm honest...
What about Pixies? |

"LostProphets.
They were ace in their day.. but urgh I.w ... "
I loved the music, saw them many times.
Now…….the thought of hearing a track turns my stomach. |

"Obv Happy Mondays. Shaun Ryder's voice lol.
Although saw them live and it was great."
I saw them a couple of years ago, Shaun was a mess! Reading the words off an iPad and Bez had to keep prompting him - great fun though. |

Oasis - Liam Gallagher. I cannot bear that nasal, whiny accent (and I'm a Manc!). Dishonourable mentions: Axl Rose, Florence Welch, Shaun Ryder, Morrissey. |

I'm the same
If it's about bad as in a bad person no-one else can take that title on this thread! |

"Iron Maiden mentioned. I think Bruces voice was never the same after the Beast 82 tour."
It was perfect when he was in Samson, but now he's like an air raid siren |

Would you want Black Francis to be a singer at your wedding? No.
Would anyone (apart from Kim Deal) being the lead singer work? No.
Technically he's appalling, but that whiney (Like Shaggy from Scooby doo) whine just works.

"Muse
Good grief.
Matt Bellamy's vocal range is amazing, 3 octaves or something of the sort! Even with a huge kick in the balls must men couldn't reach those falsetto heights!
*most"
I have to wade in on this. I have the least karaoke friendly voice, everything bar Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam and a few dishonourable mentions elsewhere are beyond my limited and deep vocal range, but I can pull off a passable falsetto for Supermassive Black Hole.
Love his range. Bloody good musician too! |

Same! I loved their music and I approved of my eldest listening to them because of the wholesome image and lack of profanity in their music makes me feel sick to think of it now |

All that vocal range and he still manages to sound awful |

"Define bad...
Genuine talent with a quirky voice?
Relies on autotune?
Shane Magowan jumps out at me as a bad singer. Pissed, drones, couldn't hold a tune if it was in a bucket."
Seconded. Fairytale of New York only worked because he sounded exactly how the character being portrayed in the song would expect to sound (which made it almost a parody of himself). He always sounded like the heavily intoxicated last karaoke participant that was left standing. Which I suppose he was. |

"I'll say it.
Amy Winehouse. Someone wrote those those songs for her guaranteed.
Because she can't sing she can't write songs? Absolute buffoonery."
Cant sing. Watched her on BBC sessions the other night, if someone else (with any talent) was behind the mic they'd still be hits. She's like a wailing cat and not in a good way. |

They're are some terrible suggestions in this thread
Singers that can't hack it any longer but were pretty decent when they started:
Coverdale
Bon Jovi
Ozzy
James LaBrie
Debby Harry
David Lee Roth (but it never mattered anyway)
Alison Motet
Singers that never had it:
Dave Mustaine
Ian Brown
Ridiculous suggestions in this thread so far:
Eddie Vedder
Noddy Holder
Matt Bellamy (I can't stand Muse, BTW)
Bruce Dickinson

"Saw the remaining members of Lostprophets (now No Devotion) support Gerard Way a few years ago with Geoff Rickly from Thursday on vocals. Felt sorry for them, they hadn’t a clue what was going on "
I always wondered what the rest of LP were doing |

Love Iron Maiden, but Bruce don't have it live anymore for years. Compared to Michael Kiske (Ex-Helloween, Helloween) in similar singing style. He actually got even better. I know a few years younger. |

Saw Maiden a couple months back, he's definitely not what he used to be... but for a man in his 60s he's doing a fantastic job. |

I know singers in their 70's doing better in similar genre. |

"Rush - great band, with possibly the best rock drummer of all time - but Geddy Lee - awful - almost like a comedy act - controversial- I know"
Exactly! I don't like Rush because of the singer. The others are great musicians. |

I've been to hundreds of gigs and I have to say that MUSE have got to possibly be the best gig I've ever been to. Especially the one I went to recently in Milton Keynes |

"Muse"
How very dare you.
Matt Bellamy has an amazing voice. Its his style you probably don't like (heavy breaths between lines).
If he was bad, they wouldn't sell out massive stadiums on every tour they do.
No such thing as bad singers anyway. Just singers that aren't to my taste.
Oops, I lied...
Robert Smith.... |
